Event: Why Syria? Why Iran?

Picket opposing imperialist intervention in Syria and Iran.

4:30–5:30pm, Friday, June 15 at Corner of Spring Garden & Barrington Streets, Halifax, Nova Scotia. Discussion to follow at Paper Chase, 5228 Blowers Street.

Oppose the Harper Dictatorship’s Participation in U.S.-NATO Schemes for Destabilizing Governments and Peoples of the Middle East!

THE warmongering against Syria is reaching fever pitch. The big powers of Western Europe, Turkey and the U.S. with Canada in tow seem determined to launch open aggression against Syria. Their covert operations have thus far failed to achieve their aim of regime change so every day they up the ante. In this regard,  the Canadian government and the Loyal Opposition in the federal Parliament are the most hysterical of warmongers.

The Harper dictatorship and the Loyal Opposition have not hesitated to repeat the Anglo-French-U.S. litany of justifications for such aggression and added some of their own. This is mainly comprised of disinformation to demonize the Syrian government which is blamed for gross violations of human rights. This is to make sure no investigations can seriously determine who is committing the violations, while also claiming that external powers, like Russia, are fuelling the internal conflict.

In this way Canada is deploying itself to advance the U.S. imperialist interests in particular. It wants  the kind of “humanitarian intervention” which culminated with regime change in Libya but has to contend with the likes of Russia first. To do this it is advancing a self-serving definition of what constitutes foreign interference in the internal affairs of a country. According to the Canadian warmongers, it is foreign interference in the internal affairs of Syria when Russia and China defend their political and economic relations with Syria because these relations are outside the U.S. imperialist sphere of control. But, according to them, all the covert operations carried out by the U.S. and western imperialist powers and their client states in the Middle East and Turkey are not foreign interference. These actions are allegedly disinterested because they are said to have the aim of defending human rights. It is the most unadulterated balderdash. Amongst other things, the aim is to confuse the anti-war movement, while it sets in motion its deadly plans to attack Syria.

At the centre of the disinformation is the Kofi Annan peace mission. Those in the western imperialist camp, in which Canada is as part of U.S. interests, accepted the mission so as not to appear too eager to invade. At the same time, they used this to gain time to further fuel an internal conflict. Now they are trying to show once again that peace and political solutions are not possible without the overthrow of the government, which NATO is no doubt preparing.

Meanwhile, the U.S. and Canada are also using the Annan mission to divert the anti-war movement into supporting intervention in Syria in the name of Responsibility to Protect. Calls to pressure Russia and China to stop “sponsoring” the Assad government are used to say it is these countries which are interfering in Syrian affairs while the fact that the U.S. is itself openly financing and arming the opposition to the Assad government is to be passed over in silence.

The latest developments come in the wake of the May 25 massacre of more than 100 civilians – including as many as 49 children under the age of 10 – in the Syrian village of Houla outside the oil-refining centre of Homs. While it remains unclear who is responsible, evidence has emerged which vindicates the claim that the Syrian government did not in fact perpetrate that massacre as the U.S., Canada and others immediately maintained. Canada even expelled Syrian diplomatic personnel and made strident demands for retribution.

Most reports indicate that, on the contrary, the massacre may have been a “false flag” operation conducted by sectarian gangs armed by Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Turkey and the usual NATO suspects. Despite this, the U.S., Canada and others continue to find pretexts to step up their warmongering. In this vein, Canadian Foreign Minister John Baird has joined the U.S. imperialist warmongers in demonizing the person and government of Syrian President Assad as “baby-killers.” In the wake of the monopoly media’s din surrounding Houla, Minister Baird’s guide and teacher, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, finally revealed her typically uncouth warmongering persona when she openly admitted that her government is arming the opposition to President Assad and doesn’t care whether he leaves power “voluntarily or in a box.”

Irrespective of who bears responsibility for the Houla massacre, it is hypocrisy and disinformation of the highest order when those whose hands are covered in blood from the crimes committed against the peoples in all corners of the world condemn others. They cannot and do not have the interests of peace or justice in their plans. They intend to use any tragedy to “legitimize” imperialist military intervention.

Baird and the rest of the Harper gang and the Loyal Opposition refuse to publicly rule out the prospect of Canadian forces becoming engaged either from NATO bases in Turkey and southern Europe, or from a frigate reported to have been “on station” in the Mediterranean off the Syrian coast for the past year.

The U.S. camp’s strategy is ultimately also aimed at targeting the Islamic Republic of Iran for attack once Syria is out of the way. To justify such an aggression, like the fairy tale a decade ago about weapons of mass destruction buried in the deserts of Iraq, deafening propaganda is being floated world-wide – especially from the United States and Israel – about the alleged dangers of Iran developing a nuclear bomb. The real issue, however, is the imperialists’ ambition to eliminate Iran’s political independence, especially its independent development and management of current and future oil production on its territory. The gauntlet is openly being thrown down by the Big Powers. The peoples of the world cannot afford to hesitate for a minute. Peace-loving humanity must take its stand against this latest grave danger of war, one that could easily escalate far beyond the borders of Syria and/or Iran.

Hands Off Syria! Hands Off Iran!

Canada Needs an Anti-War Government!

Get Canada Out of NATO!
