Members of the Seafarers International Union (SIU) of Canada have been protesting the Harper government across the country as part of their fight against the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) with the European Union.
They point out that the neo-liberal trade agreement will seriously harm their livelihood. One particular concern they raise is cabotage rights, which reserve waterway transport for Canadian vessels.
On February 13, SIU members quickly mobilized to make an appearance in Quebec City, where Prime Minister Harper and several ministers were in the middle of a campaign-style tour. A statement from the SIU Canada posted on Facebook reads:
“With only two hours notice of Harpers schedule for Quebec City Port Agent Gabrielle Gagne rounded up some members and headed out. In temperatures most people hide from SIU members in Qc showed Harper he can’t hide from us!”
