Calendar of Events

A National Day of Action against Bill C-51, Anti-Terrorism Act, 2015 has been called for March 14. Demonstrations will take place in cities across Canada with more being organize by the day. The Day of Action is spearheaded by the BC Government and Service Employees’ Union (BCGEU) with events sponsored by various organizations concerned about the criminalization of dissent, the creation of a police state and attacks on civil liberties.

We call on our readers to go all out to make the Day of Action to Stop Bill C-51 a success!

On the event page for the Day of Action the organizers write, “The proposed legislation Bill C-51 should be of concern to all Canadians. It would clearly allow for the violation of Charter Rights, facilitate spying on innocent Canadians, and create a secret police force with little oversight or accountability.”

Many fear that the goal of the government’s new anti-terrorism legislation is to stifle and criminalize dissent and the resistance movements of Canadians, Quebeckers and First Nations. Bill C-51 comes at a time when more and more people are working for change and how to be effective in action to create a society fit for human beings. The Harper government’s answer to this is laws that will turn political problems into issues of national security and put people at the mercy of unaccountable police agencies and government defining who is an enemy.

That all this is done in the name of fighting terrorism and people’s safety and security confirms that the real danger is a political power that has been hijacked by private interests over which the people can exercise no control.

Rather than putting a chill on the exercise of the right to conscience Canadians are meeting Bill C-51 head on and working to defeat it.

Invite your friends, family, co-workers and communities to participate in the Day of Action and other events to discuss and oppose Bill C-51!
