Nepean – Q & A from Electors: What is your stance on the legalization of marijuana?

Q: What is your stance on the legalization of marijuana?

A: The MLPC categorically opposes making the use and growing of marijuana a law and order issue.

The legalization of marijuana for medical purposes should be a matter determined by scientific research and medical professionals. Stephen Harper has dismissed the research and presents the issue as a moral question based on religious values and a matter of law and order. The Harper campaign also uses this issue to divide the voters and appeal to his socially conservative base of supporters who declare their values to be Canadian values. A distinction should be made between what serves the public good and personal values which are a private affair.

The social and recreational use of marijuana should be decriminalized. As in the case of other recreational drugs, such as tobacco and alcohol, the production and distribution of marijuana can also be regulated and treated in the same manner as home brewing of beer and wine-making.

The larger context of societal and personal well being requires putting the decision-making power in the hands of the people.
