May I recommend a ‘must read’, a tour de force: ‘The Unwomanly Face of War’ by Svetlana Alexievich. This book is an oral history of the very women in the above photograph. Her books should be made compulsory reading in all Literature and History classes. Another of her books,’Zinky Boys’ or ‘Boys in Zinc’ is an equally harrowing oral history of the Russian/Afghan War.
