2022 Rim of the Pacific war exercises: Canada committing crimes against the peace in Asia Pacific

By Nick Lin

Canada is a participant in RIMPAC 2022. Beyond taking part in these war preparations, Canada continues to play a detestable role in the Asia Pacific in lockstep with U.S. imperialism, in places where the Canadian military has no business being.

A press release from the Department of National Defence (DND) informs that on June 14, HMCS Vancouver and HMCS Winnipeg and their helicopter air detachments “departed for a five-month deployment in the Indo-Pacific region.” DND says, “Canada is deploying two frigates to work with allies and like-minded partners and to support government objectives to uphold the rules-based international order and international law.”

Armed Forces digital recruitment campaign

Besides increasing the amounts of money to fund NATO and weapons, Canada’s Armed Forces are also conducting what they call a Digital Recruitment Campaign to co-opt the youth.

The vice-chief of Canada’s defence staff said in a March 10 press release that the military is embarking on a digital recruitment drive to build up its numbers, Canadian Press (CP) reported at the time.

CANSEC: Increased military spending and overall militarization in the name of “protecting Canadians from threats at home and abroad”

Unfettered Increase in Arms Trade

By Pierre Soublière

Demonstration against 2016 CANSEC arms show in Ottawa

CANSEC, Canada’s “largest global defence and security trade show,” will be holding its annual gathering of arms and merchants of death on June 1 and 2 at the EY Centre in Ottawa. The event is organized by the Canadian Association of Defence and Security Industries (CADSI), which is “the voice of more than 800 Canadian Defence and security companies,” including Boeing, General Dynamics and SAAB.

Do not let warmongers speak in our name! Oppose CANSEC weapons fair and all it represents!

By Pierre Soublière

Canada’s Global Defence and Security Trade Show (CANSEC), organized by the Canadian Association of Defence and Security Industries (CADSI) is the biggest weapons fair held annually in all of North America. It is being held this year on June 1 in Ottawa in an already warmongering atmosphere verging on full-blown war hysteria. The principled foreign policy espoused by Canadians has always opposed the use of force to settle conflicts between countries. Such a foreign policy is not being followed by the Canadian government whose membership in the U.S.-led North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) means that billions are being spent on weapons and the only option considered to end the war in Ukraine is the military defeat of Russia.

Report on racism in the Canadian military: Blaming the past to exonerate the present

Did the Charter of Rights and Freedoms indeed mark a break with the past? Is the Canadian Multiculturalism Act a break with racism, or is it a modernized declaration that the Canadian polity is made up of “two founding nations” and “others”?

The 121-page report, Final Report of the Minister of National Defence Advisory Panel on Systemic Racism and Discrimination with a Focus on Anti-Indigenous and Anti-Black Racism, LGBTQ2+ Prejudice, Gender Bias, and White Supremacy, purports to deal with racism in the Canadian military.

Insidious report on racism in Canadian military released

A racist outlook informs all the practices of colonial Canada and its institutions, including the military. The outlook and practice of racism must be discarded, along with the structures and chain of command based on preserving it.

By ANNA DiCARLO

The Liberal government recently released a report which purports to deal with racism in the Canadian military. The report, dated January 2022, was only made public on April 25. It bypassed the House of Commons, to whom all government ministries are said to be responsible and accountable.

Calls to place US missiles and other military installations in Canada

War preparations in the name of national interest. The situation in Ukraine shows how important it is to elaborate why Canada should get out of NATO and NORAD and how Canada’s membership in NATO and NORAD are factors that contribute to war | Enver Villamizar

CTV News reports that retired Canadian General Tom Lawson, a former NORAD Deputy Commander serving under U.S. command before serving as Canada’s Chief of Defence Staff from 2012-2015, said the opportunity the conflict in Ukraine presents is “a perfect moment to announce that we’re coming on board with all forms of [U.S.] ballistic missile defence and we are going to discuss the positioning of new [U.S.] radar systems and new [U.S.] missile interceptors on Canadian soil.” He added: “And, by the way, we are now announcing that we’re buying F-35s, the first of which will be delivered four years from now. Now, all of a sudden, you’re looking pretty beefy.”

105th anniversary of Battle of Vimy Ridge April 9-12, 1917: Canada must never again provide cannon fodder for imperial interests

Canadian soldiers in the trenches at Vimy Ridge, 1917.

On April 2, 1917, the Canadian Corps, deployed as part of the British Army on Vimy Ridge in France in the First World War, initiated the largest artillery barrage in history up to that point. They shelled the German trenches for a week, using more than one million shells. The German artillery pieces were hidden behind the ridge, but by observing the sound and light from their firing, the Canadians were able to locate and destroy about 83 per cent of the German guns.

73rd anniversary of the founding of NATO

Today, the wars in which the U.S. imperialists and NATO members are engaged are not politics by other means when negotiations fail. These are wars of destruction and, because there are no politics, there are no negotiations.

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is an aggressive military-political alliance. It was conceived and brought into being on April 4, 1949 during the Cold War, on the pretext of defending Europe against “communist invasion” and the claim that the communist “evil” and totalitarianism were a threat to Western freedom and democracy. In this regard, it has always described itself as a defensive alliance, a myth perpetrated to this day which has no basis in fact.

One explanation for why the Ottawa ‘Freedom Convoy’ is treated with kid gloves

“At every step of the way, all three levels of government – federal, provincial and municipal — have been noticeably outmanoeuvred. Thus, the occupation continues as do the border blockades. The other thing that has become very noticeable is that the convoy, occupation and blockades bear the stamp of military-style organization. It has been revealed that some of the main organizers have a knowledge of military tactics and police procedures” | PETER EWART

Four days after the election and the Afghan debacle before that, the Canadian Forces is launching yet another U.S.-style militarist spectacle, a “flyby” over a Canadian Football League (CFL) game featuring an “appreciation” of the military and war and its brutality. The spectacle is co-sponsored by Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE), the latest owner of the CFL franchise Argonaut franchise of the CFL. This oligopoly also owns Raptors of the NBA cartel, Maple Leafs of the NHL cartel, Toronto FC of the MLS cartel, Scotiabank Centre, operator of BMO Field (owned by the City of Toronto), lucrative downtown real estate, cable TV channels, you name it.

Not a single youth for imperialist war

Youth in the forefront of opposition to imperialist war in the years since 9/11, Windsor, March 19, 2004.

By Alexandre Cubaynes

Besides the hundreds of thousands of people killed as a result of U.S. wars of aggression and occupation in which Canada has also participated, many young people have been killed and wounded and suffer post-traumatic stress as a result of crimes committed in Afghanistan and other countries. They are also victimized by the lack of care upon their return home. Youth for Democratic Renewal (YDR) is involving young people to look at the Canadian government’s continued efforts to mobilize youth for imperialist wars, war preparations and other provocative activities at the national and international level. YDR also opposes the militarization of cultural life and the education system in myriad ways and participates in antiwar activities to Make Canada a Zone for Peace.

The cartel parties have no remorse about Canada’s crimes after 9/11

After 20 years, they said we need to reflect

We are in the midst of the 6th federal election held since 9/11. The Chretien Liberals were in power in 2001 and it was on October 7 that the Prime Minister officially announced Canada’s participation in the so-called “war on terror,” with warships deployed from Halifax in mid-October and 40 members of the Joint Task Force, the army’s secret special forces unit being deployed in December. This was in the midst of Canada’s hosting of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly which launched the justification of the operation of the NATO alliance outside of the North Atlantic in the name of ensuring the “defence and security of North America and Europe.”

State funerals to promote the military

Oppose all-sided militarization of life and war preparations

She was killed on May 17 when her plane crashed in a residential neighbourhood in Kamloops, BC, during it’s cross-Canada military public relations and recruitment tour codenamed Operation Inspiration. Major NATO military provocation in Halifax on Labour Day: No Harbour for War!

No US or NATO warships in Canadian waters!

(Revised & updated September 7) – While the media presented the Canadian International Air Show in Toronto on September 4-5 sponsored by Lockheed Martin as a one-off, local and unique spectacle of “family entertainment”, the Trudeau government is simultaneously staging a major NATO naval exercise in Nova Scotia, Cutlass Fury 2021. On September 6, Labour Day, 14 NATO warships and aircraft were to perform a high profile, wartime Halifax Harbour Sail + Fly Past.  The sail / fly pass was then postponed until Tuesday, September 7 at 4:30pm and then again postponed another hour. The U.S. warships left early and the French brought up the rear of the bedraggled formation much later. As always, the U.S. makes the rules, decides what is to be done, and who is to be left behind! In turn this is the latest of a seres of such events that represent a warmongering outlook and program unacceptable to the majority of Canadians who want Canada to be a force for peace in the world. More and more not a single U.S., NATO or foreign warship can dock in a Canadian port without being met by demonstrators.

CANCEL the CNE Air Show

During the 2019 action, protesters carried signs and chalked slogans on the sidewalk leading to the CNE grounds: Fighter Jets Are Bad for Climate and People, Air Shows Lead to Air Wars, No Militarized Entertainment, Ground the Air Show and others.

Canadian Voice of Women for Peace, World Without War, CPC (M-L) and others are holding a protest at the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto on Sunday, September 5 to oppose the use of the CNE to promote war and militarism in Canada as “family entertainment.”

They demand an end to the Canadian International Air Show which highlights U.S. and Canadian fighter jets. Participating NATO military groups are the Canadian Forces Snowbirds and CF-18, the United States Air Force Thunderbirds and the British Royal Air Force Red Arrow. The main sponsor of the event is Lockheed Martin which is currently bidding for the contract to manufacture 88 new fighter jets for the Canadian military with 88 new fighter jets at an estimated expenditure of $19 billion ($77 billion over the lifecycle). The jets will be used against countries targeted in U.S. and NATO wars of aggression.

Trudeau government signs warmongering Joint Statement with the United States

Without any discussion with the public or even in Parliament, the Trudeau Liberal government issued a “Joint Statement on NORAD Modernization” with the U.S. Biden administration on August 14. NORAD, along with NATO, integrates Canada into the U.S. war economy and strategy to wage endless wars for global hegemony. It brings Canadian forces under the command of the president of the United States.

D-Day June 6, 1944. Normandy Landing during World War Two

By Hilary LeBlanc

D-Day landing in Normandy, June 6, 1944.

On June 6, 1944, during World War II, an invasion force comprised of U.S., British and Canadian troops landed on the coast of Normandy, France. This date known to history as D-Day, refers to the long-awaited invasion of northwest Europe to open a Second Front against the Nazi forces of Adolf Hitler who had occupied France and most of Europe and had been waging a savage war against the Soviet Union. To that time, the Soviet Union had borne the brunt of the fight against Hitler. From 1941 to 1945, the Soviet peoples fought more than 75 per cent of the German and Axis forces and suffered the loss during the war, all-told, of more than 20 million people.

Putting Canadian and Quebec territory and public space in service of aggressive military alliances

October 30, 2004. Demonstration in opposition to the presence of warships in Montreal.

By Christine Dandenault and Claude Brunelle

Canada is a founding member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) established on April 4, 1949. It has also been a member of the North American Aerospace Defence Command (NORAD) since May 12, 1958. The integration of the Canadian military into the U.S. military has been one of the characteristics of Canada’s membership in these military alliances. Despite the determined and continued opposition of the Quebec, Canadian and Indigenous peoples to any participation of Canada in such alliances and wars of aggression and occupation under the helm of the U.S. imperialists, the Canadian government continues its interventions against the peoples of the world. This translates into putting the territory, public space and public funds at the disposal of these alliances.

La Presse reported on October 21, that the Canadian government will be increasing the federal budget allocation for war based on its commitment as a member of NATO. “NATO figures show that Canada is on the verge of committing 1.45 per cent of its GDP to the military this year. This not only represents a significant hike from last year’s 1.29 per cent, but the largest share of the GDP for defence in a decade.[1]

“It also exceeds the Liberal government’s original provisions, set out in the 2017 defence policy, to spend 1.4 per cent of the GDP on the military by 2024-2025 – the year NATO members were to reach the two per cent target.”[2] Continue reading
