On April 3, Canadian Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan and Ukrainian Defence Minister Stepan Poltorak announced the signing of the Canada-Ukraine Defence Cooperation Arrangement. The agreement reportedly increases mutual co-operation in the areas of military policy, education, military research and development, as well as arms production.
Sajjan stated that the signing “shows Canada’s steadfast commitment to Ukraine and the Ukrainian people. It strengthens the ties between our two nations and helps us continue to develop our rich, mutually beneficial relationships. Canada remains fully committed to providing assistance to Ukraine, helping to preserve and protect its sovereignty through Operation UNIFIER, and to supporting the implementation of key reforms.” Continue reading

It could scarcely be clearer. On top of laying the groundwork for increased arming of the Ukrainian armed forces, the Canada-Ukraine Defence Cooperation Agreement constitutes another means to expand arms sales from Canada to the Saudi Arabia dictatorship for war and aggression in the Middle East using Ukraine as a transit, as well as to potentially increase the share of the global arms trade by Pratt & Whitney, Esterline GMC Electronics and other private arms monopolies | An exposé by TONY SEED

(May 20) – One of the main features of the Defence Agreement between Canada and Ukraine signed on April 3 is the neo-liberal arrangements regarding arms production and the global arms trade. These arrangements are taking place within the conditions of intensified inter-imperialist rivalry to monopolize the global arms trade and the expansion of the theatre of operations of the U.S.-NATO bloc not only in Eastern Europe but also in the Middle East. The AFP news agency reports that Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan “also said [the Defence Agreement] was a step toward liberalizing arms sales to Ukraine, which are currently restricted. The accord is ‘a very important step before [we] get to that,’ he said.” In a Department of National Defence (DND) release, he stated it “helps us continue to develop our rich, mutually beneficial relationships.”
The agreement codifies, legitimizes and opens the door to government funding of private arms deals that have already been negotiated between giant arms monopolies of Canada and Ukraine. It marks the latest stage in the accelerated rapprochement between the two countries’ military and security establishments in recent years. This relationship, with typically overt and covert features, is undertaking increasing strategic significance with a number of important partnerships forged in the military-industrial and educational sectors. (March 25) – On March 6, the Trudeau government announced an extension of Canada’s military intervention in the civil war in Ukraine for another two years. Since January 2014, Canada has allocated $700 million in funds for Ukraine, some of which was used to purchase military equipment. The Trudeau Liberals are now adding untold more hundreds of millions to this amount. Continue reading

(March 18) – The issues which have come to light about Chrystia Freeland demand her resignation for misrepresenting facts, concealing her past and deliberately hiding the truth about it to Canadians. Why? If she did not come clean about this what else will she not come clean about as foreign minister of Canada?
She has shown she is willing to address questions of war and peace, about which Canadians are very concerned, in a deceitful and arrogant way. This is not right or acceptable. A person who has a clear conscience does not resort to such double talk and shenanigans. Continue reading

“Ukraine’s agriculture could be a real gold mine.” – U.S.-Ukraine Business Council
The Harper government intervenes in Ukraine and provides troops, guns and “aid” under the pretext of opposing “Russian aggression.” Canadians should firmly reject this meddling in Ukraine’s affairs as they can no doubt extrapolate that the same process in the Ukraine is also being carried out by the imperialists in our country and elsewhere. In fact, while it is wrecking Canadian agriculture through neo-liberal globalization, secret trade deals such as the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and handing over the Canadian Wheat Board to U.S.-Saudi interests, CIDA is funding the plunder of the rich agricultural resources of Ukraine, as part of the U.S.-EU imperial project to subvert and annex that country. Well before the coup of February, 2014 CIDA had designated Ukraine as the one and only country in Europe as a strategic target of “aid.”
Canadians should be wary of illusions of the Trudeau Liberals, who are even more bellicose on Ukraine and were the ones to originally bind Canada to neo-liberal globalization. The Paul Martin Liberals were up the their necks in the 2004 “Orange Revolution,” which brought the open rule of the oligarchs to power. It merits attention that Trudeau’s spokesperson on Ukraine and chair of his council of economic advisers, Chrystia Freeland, is the grand-daughter of a Ukrainian Nazi collaborator (Mykhailo Chomiak, editor of Krakivs’ki visti [Cracow News] 1940-45), and sycophant of such billionaire oligarchs as Victor Pinchuk, for whom she moderates his annual Yalta European Strategy (YES).

(June 21) – Samantha Power’s delusions notwithstanding, due to the inordinate presence of non-democratic elements and outside the Maidan government, ‘Ukrainian democracy’ remains a distant dream. We learned from the shortcomings of early ‘transitology’ in the 1990s that free and fair elections do not a democracy make.
