Harper’s wrecking of Canadian farming goes hand in hand with wrecking of Ukrainian farming

“Ukraine’s agriculture could be a real gold mine.” – U.S.-Ukraine Business Council

medium_financial_fraudThe Harper government intervenes in Ukraine and provides troops, guns and “aid” under the pretext of opposing “Russian aggression.” Canadians should firmly reject this meddling in Ukraine’s affairs as they can no doubt extrapolate that the same process in the Ukraine is also being carried out by the imperialists in our country and elsewhere. In fact, while it is wrecking Canadian agriculture through neo-liberal globalization, secret trade deals such as the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and handing over the Canadian Wheat Board to U.S.-Saudi interests, CIDA is funding the plunder of the rich agricultural resources of Ukraine, as part of the U.S.-EU imperial project to subvert and annex that country. Well before the coup of February, 2014 CIDA had designated Ukraine as the one and only country in Europe as a strategic target of “aid.”

Canadians should be wary of illusions of the Trudeau Liberals, who are even more bellicose on Ukraine and were the ones to originally bind Canada to neo-liberal globalization. The Paul Martin Liberals were up the their necks in the 2004 “Orange Revolution,” which brought the open rule of the oligarchs to power. It merits attention that Trudeau’s spokesperson on Ukraine and chair of his council of economic advisers, Chrystia Freeland, is the grand-daughter of a Ukrainian Nazi collaborator (Mykhailo Chomiak, editor of Krakivs’ki visti [Cracow News] 1940-45), and sycophant of such billionaire oligarchs as Victor Pinchuk, for whom she moderates his annual Yalta European Strategy (YES).

Ed Fast, Minister of International Trade, led a “trade development mission” to Ukraine at the end of January 2015. A press release from Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada explained, “This trip reinforces Canada’s commitment to supporting Ukraine in its pursuit of freedom, democracy and economic growth.”

Canadian Wheat Board Alliance intervenes in election to stop Harper

The farmers of the Canadian Wheat Board Alliance (CWBA) have produced a four-page pamphlet The Great Canadian Grain Robbery discussing the 2015 Election and the situation of grain farmers, as well as other materials on the “Facts Harper Is Hiding.” The pamphlet is being distributed as an insert in selected papers across western Canada. In it they state, “It is time for the Harper government to be held accountable for the systematic destruction of western Canada’s farmer directed and owned Wheat Board marketing system.” They call on everyone to “Vote for Change” on October 19 and to join the Alliance in calling for the re-establishment of the Canadian Wheat Board’s single-desk marketing system.

In addition to holding Harper accountable for destroying farmer-controlled supply marketing in the grain sector, the farmers also speak to Harper’s attack on public science, his book burnings and transfer of control over grain genetics from farmers to agro-chemical-seed monopolies. They also raise the vandalizing of public agricultural resources, which the federal government is responsible for on behalf of all Canadians such as the 2.5 million acres of grassland preserved by the Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Act. These community pasture grasslands are an important part of the overall prairie ecology, the farmers point out.

How Harper handed the Canadian Wheat Board to two foreign monopolies, Bunge and the Saudi Kings fund

110501-OttawaMayDay-32crop4September 27 marked the final official day of yet another Harper sellout deal, which abolished the 80-year-old, farmer-controlled Canada Wheat Board and gave complete control of Canada’s grain industry to a partnership of a private U.S. monopoly called Bunge and the royal family of Saudi Arabia. It is (1) another instance of nation wrecking by neo-liberal globalization – thanks to Harper and his flunky Minister of Agriculture, Gerry Ritz, this key sector of Canada’s food industry is now under foreign control; and (2) another deposit to the unholy, barbaric U.S.-Saudi alliance by the Harper government, which includes massively subsidized exports of armoured personnel carriers from General Dynamics, one of the largest arms merchants in the world, to Saudi Arabia. It demonstrates why the MLPC calls for a new direction for the economy. A release from the National Farmers Union issued in April, 2015 explains.

“Today (April 15, 2015) Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz announced that G3, a joint venture owned by two foreign corporations, Bunge and the Saudi investment company SALIC, is the beneficiary of CWB* [Canadian Wheat Board] privatization. With this, the Conservative government has accomplished the biggest transfer of wealth away from farmers in the history of Canada,” said Jan Slomp, National Farmers Union (NFU) President. “The CWB’s physical assets, its commercial relationships, and its good name have all been given away. The ‘buyers’ of the CWB actually get to keep the $250 million pittance they are ‘paying’ for it. Bunge’s 2014 sales totalled $58 billion and multi-billion dollar SALIC is a subsidiary of the Saudi sovereign wealth fund, PIF.” Continue reading

Farmers have traditionally been reliable supporters of Stephen Harper’s Conservative government.

But that’s changing. In the past five years, more and more farmers have turned against the prime minister. A farmer in Brantford, Ont., recently went so far as to mow the message “Anybody But Harper” into one of his fields. Continue reading
