Dalhousie University and the University of King’s College, together and in partnership with the Black Cultural Centre for Nova Scotia are pleased to announce an online event focused on the theme of Slavery and Reparations: African Nova Scotia, Canada and Beyond. This event is being held in preparation for the 2023 Universities Studying Slavery Conference, which will take place in Halifax, Nova Scotia (see below).

Featuring panelists (2-4pm EST): Cikiah Thomas (Co-ChairInternational Working Committee, Global African Congress); Delvina Bernard (PhD-candidate, International Development Studies, Saint Mary’s University); Dr. Andrea Douglas (Director, Jefferson School African American Heritage Centre)

Keynote lecture (5-7pm EST) by Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, Vice-Chancellor of the University of the West Indies and the leading international scholar on reparations.

The Cuban Revolution at 60 international conference

Forty internationally renowned Cuba scholars, policy-makers and policy analysts will gather at Dalhousie University in Halifax this fall to take the measure of “The Cuban Revolution at 60.”

The three-day symposium (October 31–November 2) will be highlighted by addresses by two of the key players in the historic 2014 re-opening of relations between Cuba and the United States. Josefina Vidal, now Cuba’s ambassador to Canada and then Cuba’s chief negotiator with the Americans, and Jeffrey DeLaurentis, the first US ambassador to Cuba following the renewal of relations, will each offer personal reflections on what happened then, and what isn’t happening now.

Tony Seed, Halifax Media Co-op, April 20, 2011 – ON TUESDAY, APRIL 19, some thirty international students at Dalhousie University held an emergency protest rally outside the Mona Campbell business building  – where the Dal board of governors was to meet – to condemn a 10 per cent increase in differential fees over and above the proposed three cent increase in student tuition and by 10 and 14 per cent for medical and dentistry students (in effect, a user pay fee) respectively.

VANCOUVER (9 August 2007) IPS – Steven Staples, a prominent Canadian peace activist, is accusing the Canadian military of subtle surveillance after the military sent an officer to take notes on him at a conference at Dalhousie University in 2006.

The story came to light a few weeks ago after freedom of information requests finally revealed that briefings had been written for senior military officers.

Just got back from the debate between four of the five candidates running in my new home riding. It seems wherever I move, ghosts of NDP Leaderships past haunt me as my new MP. Maybe things’ll change, who knows? If I hear that Audrey MacLaughin is making a comeback then I’ll know I am about to be shipped to Whitehorse for some adventure.

In fairness to Alexa she proved the old adage that in debates, “she who brings the most bodies gets the easiest questions”.
