US ‘perception management’: CIA’s hidden hand in ‘democracy’ groups

Freedom House, New York City

Special Report: Documents from the Reagan presidential library reveal that two major institutions promoting “democracy” and “freedom” — Freedom House and National Endowment for Democracy — worked hand-in-glove, behind-the-scenes, with a CIA propaganda expert in the 1980s, reports ROBERT PARRY*. Both these agencies operate inside Canada and are funded by the Harper government. US ‘perception management’: Attempt to subvert the anti-war movement

Haligonians rally against threats of war against Syria, September 7, 2013

Demonstrating the necessity of a consistent and principled anti-imperialist and anti-war stand, Haligonians rally against threats of war against Syria, September 7, 2013 as part of its action program of weekly pickets

Since the anti-war protests on Vietnam, the U.S. government has made “perception management” of the American people a high priority, feeding them a steady diet of propaganda about foreign crises, even getting U.S. and Canadian “peace groups” to buy into and actually sell “pro-democracy” wars, write MARGARET SARFEHJOOY and COLEEN ROWLEY*.

(Dec. 25) – “War is peace” double-speak has become commonplace these days. And, the more astute foreign policy journalists and commentators are beginning to realize the extent of how “liberal interventionists” work in sync with neocon warhawks to produce and sustain a perpetual state of U.S. war.

More and more “peace and social justice” groups are even being twisted into “democracy promotion,” U.S. militarism style. Continue reading

US ‘perception management’: The ‘evil enemy’, from Reagan to Obama

In the 1980s, the Reagan administration pioneered “perception management” to get the American people to “kick the Vietnam Syndrome” and accept more U.S. interventionism, but that propaganda structure continues to this day getting the public to buy in to endless war, writes ROBERT PARRY*.

(Dec. 28) – To understand how the American people find themselves trapped in today’s Orwellian dystopia of endless warfare against an ever-shifting collection of “evil” enemies, you have to think back to the Vietnam War and the shock to the ruling elite caused by an unprecedented popular uprising against that war.

While on the surface Official Washington pretended that the mass protests didn’t change policy, a panicky reality existed behind the scenes, a recognition that a major investment in domestic propaganda would be needed to ensure that future imperial adventures would have the public’s eager support or at least its confused acquiescence. Subversion: U.S. government aims to form team of ‘journalists’ inside Cuba

usaidFOLLOWING explosive revelations that the U.S. government bribed Miami “journalists” in 1999 to guarantee the unjust convictions of the five Cuban patriots who are completing 14 years of arbitrary and illegal punishment, it has launched a new operation. It is to be headed by an ex-CIA agent and is to employ a considerable number of “journalists” – in reality, undercover agents – in “major cities in Cuba, including Havana and Santiago de Cuba.” The dirty operation aims to publish articles and commentaries and produce a new storm of disinformation against the sovereign Caribbean island republic, writes Florida-based journalist and author TRACEY EATON in this exposé.

Contracts reveal Miami journalists on U.S. government payroll

A MULTI-YEAR effort by the U.S. National Committee to Free the Cuban Five, the U.S. Partnership for Civil Justice Fund and Liberation newspaper has uncovered thousands of pages of previously unreleased materials that reveal that the U.S. government was paying Miami-based journalists who saturated the Miami media with reports that were highly inflammatory and prejudicial to the five Cuban anti-terrorism fighters during their trial in that U.S. city.

The Smith-Mundt Act of 1948 prohibits the U.S. government from funding activities to influence and propagandize domestic public opinion.

More than 2,200 pages of contracts between Miami journalists and Radio and TV Martí have been released thus far to Liberation newspaper through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) petition.

The Broadcasting Board of Governors – an official U.S. government agency – and its Office of Cuba Broadcasting have operated Radio Martí since 1985 and TV Martí since 1990.

The U.S. government has funneled nearly half a billion dollars into the Office of Cuba Broadcasting in Miami. With an annual budget nearing $35 million, the Office of Cuba Broadcasting and the Broadcasting Board of Governors put on their payroll domestic journalists to broadcast the same message inside and outside the United States on Cuba-related issues, effectively violating the law against domestic dissemination of U.S. propaganda.

These contracts evidence the U.S. government’s payments to journalists in Miami whose reports constituted a sustained effort to create an atmosphere of hysteria and bias against Cuba and the Cuban Five.

Canada’s self-serving law and order ‘aid’ to Haiti

ON MAY 7, Foreign Minister Lawrence Cannon completed a three-day visit to Haiti, which was punctuated with announcements of various projects to be funded by the Canadian government. Given that health care and rebuilding of housing remain the most urgent need of the Haitian people, it is notable that aid being provided to Haiti by the Government of Canada is focused on law and order measures such as prisons, policing and the judicial system. * * *

On the question of Muslims and the Media, I want to make several important points. I will stay away from the examples of media disinformation that are prevalent and well known to us all, especially to Muslims who are its victims. Instead, I want to highlight aspects of the modus operandi and underlying premise of this media disinformation. Continue reading
