US media ‘experts’ on Iran with undisclosed ties to the defence industry

Since US president Donald Trump ordered the drone attack that assassinated Iranian Major General Qasem Soleimani and Abud Mahdi al-Muhandis, a leading member of the Iraqi armed forces and eight other officials, US and Canadian television news has been filled with commentary on the strike and its implications. An investigation by the Popular Information website reveals that numerous “experts” appearing on cable TV to opine on Iran have undisclosed financial ties to the biggest arms monopolies. They are deliberately paraded as neutral, independent, non-partisan and “third party experts” to confuse the people and put them out of action. Some are also featured by CBC. | JUDD LEGUM

This is significant because arms monopolies and other entities that do business with the Pentagon profit from war, the most profitable business of all. They sell the products that make war possible. If there is more fighting, they will sell more weapons. That’s why weapons manufacturers saw their stock prices spike after Gen. Soleimani was killed. Continue reading

Diversion – twin brother of US policy of divide and rule

Washington, DC, August 13, 2017

By PAULINE EASTON

A state-organized racist attack took place in Charlottesville, Virginia on August 12 as elements calling themselves Nazis and KKK held a rally that ended with the brutal killing of a young woman and injuring of many more. More than 700 demonstrations subsequently took place across the U.S. in support of resistance in Charlottesville, as well as several in Canada. On all occasions, those calling themselves Nazis and KKK have been outnumbered, often 50 to 5,000, or a few hundred to many hundreds, or 50 to 40,000 as occurred in Boston on August 19. One way the White House disinforms: ‘We created an echo chamber’

Media-CulpaA portrait of Obama’s spokesperson and policy guru Ben Rhodes explains how government propaganda works. This part is about selling the Iran deal to the U.S. public:

As Malley and representatives of the State Department, including Wendy Sherman and Secretary of State John Kerry, engaged in formal negotiations with the Iranians, to ratify details of a framework that had already been agreed upon, Rhodes’s war room did its work on Capitol Hill and with reporters. In the spring of last year, legions of arms-control experts began popping up at think tanks and on social media, and then became key sources for hundreds of often-clueless reporters. “We created an echo chamber,” he admitted, when I asked him to explain the onslaught of freshly minted experts cheerleading for the deal. “They were saying things that validated what we had given them to say.Continue reading

Finally, an American journalist blasts the US media coverage of Syria. “Coverage of the Syrian war will be remembered as one of the most shameful episodes in the history of the American press. Reporting about carnage in the ancient city of Aleppo is the latest reason why.” STEPHENKINZER* details features of how the monopoly media falsifies and negates the reality of the forces in combat in Syria, prettifies terrorists as “moderates” and “freedom fighters,” and portrays a war on Syria as a religious, sectarian or “civil war.” Continue reading

The Martin Luther King you don’t see on TV

From our archives. By JEFF COHEN and NORMAN SOLOMON*

MartinLutherKingBeyondVietnam It’s become a TV ritual: Every year in mid-January, around the time of Martin Luther King’s birthday, we get perfunctory network news reports about “the slain civil rights leader.”

The remarkable thing about this annual review of King’s life is that several years – his last years – are totally missing, as if flushed down a memory hole. Continue reading

The ‘dark political arts’ behind Harper’s bid for re-election

Respond to Coup Attempt by going all out to call on Canadians to defeat the Harper government and also keep the Liberals out!

The UK’s Daily Mail comments on Lynton Crosby’s incitement of racism at the time he was an election campaign strategist for David Cameron’s Conservative Party in 2012.

The person the Harper Conservatives hired in September 2015 to manage their campaign has been described as a “master of the dark political arts,” “the Wizard of Oz,” “the Australian Karl Rove,” and “one of the most powerful and influential figures in the [Australian] nation.”[1][2]

Lynton Keith Crosby “was brought on as a campaign strategist for incumbent Prime Minister Stephen Harper, whose Conservative party was losing ground in the polls to both the Liberal Party and the New Democratic Party,” Wikipedia tells us.[3] “Crosby’s decision to bring the issue of a small group of Muslim woman refusing to remove their niqab when swearing the Canadian oath of citizenship, became one of the top issues of the campaign and reversed the Conservatives’ sliding poll numbers, especially in Quebec,” Wikipedia says.[4] Continue reading

2015.03.14.EdmontonC51DayOfAction-11cr2(April 2) – The mantra of the Harper government is that “the international jihadist movement has declared war on Canada.” This is repeated time and time again, in relation to its expanded military operations, its new anti-terrorism legislation, and even during a cabinet minister’s speech on health care. Human Rights Watch: Uses photo of US bombing destruction of Syria to condemn Assad

Human Rights Watch accuses Syria of ‘barrel bomb’ damage created by US attacks

Moon of Alabama (Feb. 27) – Human Rights Watch has been part of a sectarian, anti-Syrian propaganda campaign. It is hyping the “barrel bombs”, allegedly used by the Syrian government, as inhumane weapons. I have yet to see Human Rights Watch equally damning the indiscriminate use against civilians of improvised rockets by the Jihadist “moderate rebels.” Continue reading

Iran unveils memorial to Jewish martyrs

Monument to Jewish Martyrs unveiled in Tehran on Monday

It is fitting that the US and Canadian monopoly media would ignore this story, because it conflicts with their narrative of the so-called existential Israeli crisis of anti-semitism allegedly caused by the Islamic Republic of Iran:

“This week, Iran unveiled a memorial commemorating the lives of Jewish soldiers who died fighting for the country in the Iran-Iraq war. The monument, located in Tehran, has inscriptions in both Hebrew and Persian, and the ceremony remembered the fallen soldiers as ‘martyrs.’”

US ‘perception management’: Attempt to subvert the anti-war movement

Haligonians rally against threats of war against Syria, September 7, 2013

Demonstrating the necessity of a consistent and principled anti-imperialist and anti-war stand, Haligonians rally against threats of war against Syria, September 7, 2013 as part of its action program of weekly pickets

Since the anti-war protests on Vietnam, the U.S. government has made “perception management” of the American people a high priority, feeding them a steady diet of propaganda about foreign crises, even getting U.S. and Canadian “peace groups” to buy into and actually sell “pro-democracy” wars, write MARGARET SARFEHJOOY and COLEEN ROWLEY*.

(Dec. 25) – “War is peace” double-speak has become commonplace these days. And, the more astute foreign policy journalists and commentators are beginning to realize the extent of how “liberal interventionists” work in sync with neocon warhawks to produce and sustain a perpetual state of U.S. war.

More and more “peace and social justice” groups are even being twisted into “democracy promotion,” U.S. militarism style. Continue reading

US ‘perception management’: The ‘evil enemy’, from Reagan to Obama

In the 1980s, the Reagan administration pioneered “perception management” to get the American people to “kick the Vietnam Syndrome” and accept more U.S. interventionism, but that propaganda structure continues to this day getting the public to buy in to endless war, writes ROBERT PARRY*.

(Dec. 28) – To understand how the American people find themselves trapped in today’s Orwellian dystopia of endless warfare against an ever-shifting collection of “evil” enemies, you have to think back to the Vietnam War and the shock to the ruling elite caused by an unprecedented popular uprising against that war.

While on the surface Official Washington pretended that the mass protests didn’t change policy, a panicky reality existed behind the scenes, a recognition that a major investment in domestic propaganda would be needed to ensure that future imperial adventures would have the public’s eager support or at least its confused acquiescence. The Wikipedia File – Wrong information and propaganda in the Online Encyclopedia

Many people were shocked to learn the news that the publishers of renowned encyclopedia have decided to stop their print edition, such as the Encyclopædia Britannica, the publishing of which came to an end in 2012, after 244 years, or the German Brockhaus this year, after it had been issued since the mid 19th century. The reason for that is Wikipedia, an online encyclopedia which has been become so widely used in the last ten years that the printed reference books were not sufficiently in demand. They were no longer profitable. Continue reading

On the 38th anniversary of the first act of terrorism against civilian aviation in the western hemisphere – the unparalleled Cubana air disaster on the coastline of Barbados on October 6, 1976 – we are publishing an informative exposé by Canadian journalist MAHDI DARIUS NAZEMROAYA on the destruction of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 (MH17) over Eastern Ukraine and its manipulation for self-serving political ends. For example, just one day after the crash, Harper’s Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird was already clamouring that “Evidence suggests the airliner was brought down by a surface-to-air missile from an area controlled by pro-Russian provocateurs in eastern Ukraine.” He hasn’t had much to say since.

AviacionavionApproximately four months after Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 (MH370) disappeared in March 2014, while en route from the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur to the Chinese capital of Beijing, another incident took place with a Malaysian passenger plane. This time Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 (MH17), en route from the Dutch capital of Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, was shot down on July 17, 2014 over the contested airspace of the breakaway Donetsk People’s Republic. The incident took place over Torez near the Russian-Ukrainian border while the authorities in Kiev were busy militarily assaulting the separatist armed forces of Novorossiya, that is, the soldiers of the breakaway Donetsk People’s Republic and Donetsk’s sister-breakaway republic in East Ukraine, the self-proclaimed Lugansk People’s Republic. Israel, Gaza and false balance

Media-CulpaUS monopoly media constructed a false symmetry of violence where none existed. The manipulation of facts included ABC World News presenting photos of a Palestinian family as Israelis. Or the Hamas “strategy to get its own children killed” that was “forcing [Israel] to kill their children.” PETER HART of FAIR*

Striving for a deceptive “balance,” US media miscast the devastating violence of Israel’s attacks on Gaza and obscured the lopsided nature of the death toll.

This started with the timeline preferred in much of the press. By most media accounts, the conflict started when three Israeli teenagers were kidnapped on June 12; their bodies were discovered on June 30. The Israeli government immediately declared Hamas responsible. Days after the discovery of the victims’ bodies, a Palestinian teenager was abducted and murdered by Israeli extremists, in what was called a “revenge” attack. Hamas rockets started falling in Israel, and “Operation Protective Edge” was Israel’s response. Continue reading

New York Times, Chrystia Freeland, on Ukraine: ‘This is not a civil war.’

By ERIC ZUESSE

(September 7) – The New York Times  publishes many wildly false articles, and this will expose only one of them, as an example:

According to Christia Freeland, writing there, on September 5th, the conflict in which the Ukrainian Government has since May 9th been bombing the residents in southeastern Ukraine — which is the area that had declared its independence from Ukraine — this “is not a civil war.” Those residents had declared their independence; the Government then bombed them for months; but that’s “not a civil war.” Continue reading

Eduardo Galeano: Lied-about wars

Galeano.MirrorsAdvertising campaigns, marketing schemes. The target is public opinion. Wars are sold the same way cars are, by lying.

In August 1964, President Lyndon Johnson accused the Vietnamese of attacking two U.S. warships in the Tonkin Gulf.

Then the president invaded Vietnam, sending planes and troops. He was acclaimed by journalists and by politicians, and his popularity skyrocketed. The Democrats in power and the Republicans out of power became a single party united against Communist aggression. Continue reading

(July 19) – On Friday afternoon July 18th in Halifax, Nova Scotia, hundreds of people gathered in front of the building which houses Canada’s state media, the CBC. An article in the CBC of the same day explains why the people of Halifax were disgusted; its subtitle quotes United States president Barack Obama: “’No nation should accept rockets fired into its borders,’ Obama says of Israel’s ground push.”

Latin American journalists organize against media violence against Venezuela

Latin American Journalists Denounce Media Violence against VenezuelaWe, writers, journalists, researchers and anti-capitalist activists, gathered at the International Forum “Media Plot Against Venezuela” held in Caracas, on 5 and 6 June 2014; discussed the current role of transnational communication, which today is obliged to distort the Venezuelan reality.

As shown in countless examples, the most recent of which includes the invasion of Libya, the mercenary attack against Syria and foreign interference in Ukraine, the coordinated actions of the transnationals precedes the announcement of extreme violence, invasion or formation of mercenary armies to cause large-scale civil clashes. Israel: Disinformation used to launch state terror

Ruins of a building struck by Israeli airstrikes in Khan Younis in the Gaza Strip, July 8, 2014.

TML Daily (July 9) – Since June 13, the Zionist government in Israel has been spreading disinformation about the case of three Israeli youth, 16-year-olds Naftali Frenkel and Gilad Shaar and 19-year-old Eyal Yifrac, whom the government initially reported as being kidnapped by forces linked to the Hamas government of Gaza. On this basis, the Zionists launched “Operation Brother’s Keeper,” on June 13 allegedly to recover the youth. This massive campaign of state terror has seen more than 2,200 house raids and more than 700 arrests, including many youth. According to Addameer Prisoner Support and Human Rights Association, as of July 4, 475 Palestinians are still detained while 170 have been placed under administrative detention.
