First Nations’ concerns about Windsor Salt’s mining leases on their lands

UNDRIP Placard

The Ojibway Mine complex sits on the land of the Walpole Island First Nation and the Caldwell First Nation. Both First Nations raised concerns about lease extensions for the Ojibway Mine complex in May and June 2021 but they were ignored. The fact that they raised concerns is documented by the Ontario Ministry of Mines. Stone Canyon Industries Holdings Inc. purchased Windsor Salt as part of its purchase of Morton Salt on April 30, 2021, a month before the period of the lease extension was posted and open for public comment. Sign on the territory of the Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg Nation.

As a resident of Ojibwe country (Grey Highlands) for the past four years, I am proud to repost the following announcement:

“Today the MLPC is posting its program inNishnaabemwin/Ojibwe, with profound appreciation to the Elder whose efforts brought this to us.

“Ojibwe is a language of the Indigenous peoples of North America, spoken in six provinces of Canada and several U.S. states. With upwards of 45,000 speakers, Ojibwe is the second most commonly spoken Indigenous language in Canada after Cree. The program posted today is in the Manitoulin Island regional version of the language, Nishnaabemwin, also known as the Odawa dialect. Nishnaabemwin and Anishinaabemowin, the more general term for Ojibwe mean “speaking the native language.”

Ojibwe-speaking peoples are active today to defend their language and culture and increase education in the language, including giving Canadians the opportunity to learn it.”
