(July 13, updated July 16, 23, 27) – On July 12, 2021 the London Guardian newspaper published a sensational decontextualized article on riots in Cuba. Along with other “serious” newspapers on every continent throughout the world, it claimed that “thousands took to the streets in cities throughout the island, demonstrating against food shortages, high prices and communist rule.”

Exponential growth of disinformation

Role of powerful private interests and the necessity to build our own organizations and media. “Although the use of social media by parties of the rich to gain electoral advantage and the wielding of social media as a weapon of U.S. imperialism against sovereign states have been well-documented, the use of social media by state agencies to directly interfere with progressive and anti-imperialist political movements is less well studied.” | SAM HEATON

internet
One of the serious problems that faces the people’s movement for empowerment today is the exponential growth of disinformation that takes advantage of modern communications technology and social media. No sooner have these advances been made than powerful private interests, the state and its agents in the ranks of the people have worked out how to dominate and wield the technology in their interests. Inside the shadowy US PR firm that’s pushing for regime change in Syria

He who plunders ... always lives in terror

He who plunders … always lives in terror

At the initiative of the “Syria Campaign”, some communalist organizations in Canada linked with the Trudeau government are supporting terrorist forces in Syria. On October 1st, in the wake of the U.S. war crimes in Deir Ezzor and Aleppo, they held a small rally on Parliament Hill in Ottawa as part of an international campaign orchestrated from the United States. A similar rally was held in Calgary. Posing as a non-political solidarity organization, the “Syria Campaign” leverages local partners and media contacts to push the U.S. into more aggressively toppling another Middle Eastern government | MAX BLUMENTHAL*

(October 3) – On September 30, demonstrators gathered in city squares across the West for a “weekend of action” to “stop the bombs” raining down from Syrian government and Russian warplanes on rebel-held eastern Aleppo. Thousands joined the protests, holding signs that read “Topple Assad” and declaring, “Enough With Assad.” Few participants likely knew that the actions were organized under the auspices of an opposition-funded public relations company called the Syria Campaign.

Call to nominate unsavoury group for Nobel Peace Prize

usastatesponsorofterrorism-cropA wide-ranging disinformation campaign as part of U.S. efforts at regime change in Syria has resulted in calls, including from within Canada, to nominate an unsavoury group for the Nobel Peace Prize. The group is called the “White Helmets” or “Syria Civil Defence.”

The “White Helmets” were founded in 2013 by James Le Mesurier, a British private military contractor, consultant for the UK Foreign Office and former military intelligence officer, when the governments of the U.S. and UK funded select individuals in rebel-held territory in Syria to travel to Turkey to allegedly receive training in rescue operations. The White Helmets group is supported by a foundation started by Le Mersurier called Mayday Rescue which operates out of the Netherlands, Dubai, Jordan and Turkey. Continue reading

The dysentery of the $10 million-a-year journalist: Brian Williams back story

Media-CulpaThe anchor and managing editor of NBC Nightly News, which CBC News describes, in all seriousness, “as one of the most respected TV news organizations in the world.” The media is in a tizzy, flabbergasted about the lies and “memory loss” of a colleague, whom they present as a lone journalist.

NY Post – Williams claimed to have gotten dysentery from drinking floodwater and seeing dead bodies float past his hotel in the New Orleans French Quarter while covering Hurricane Katrina.

However, the The New Orleans Advocate noted that the French Quarter was not flooded and quoted a local health expert who did not recall anyone getting such a stomach ailment. Continue reading

Freedom of the Press, US style: How to drive a colleague to his grave and sleep easy at night

On the collaboration of American monopoly journalists. “The fact that the Contras were the CIA’s army, and not, say, the Bolivian secret service’s army, was crucial to understanding the story – and therefore Webb’s attackers did everything they could to obscure this point.” JIM NAURECKAS*

Gary Webb

Ryan Grim’s 2009 book This Is Your Country on Drugs–recently excerpted in the Huffington Post (10/10/14)–sheds light on the establishment media’s 1996 effort to discredit Gary Webb’s Contra crack revelations (“Dark Alliance,”San Jose Mercury News, 8/18-20/96) by talking to some of the key players. As depicted in the new biopic Kill the Messenger, other journalists’ attacks on Webb cost him his job, and after being run out of the profession he loved, in 2004 he apparently took his own life. But the people who wrote those attacks sleep very well, they want you to know–it’s an object lesson in how to do bad without feeling bad. Continue reading

Freedom of the press, US style: Killing the messenger vs. truth telling

Much of modern American filmmaking is escapist and vapid, but not “Kill the Messenger,” the new movie recounting the brave Contra-cocaine reporting by Gary Webb and his subsequent destruction at the hands of the monopoly media, writes JAMES DIEUGENIO*. His informative article, however, overlooks Webb’s exposure of the CIA’s narco-terrorist Luis Posada Carriles (see here).

(Oct. 16) – I only met Gary Webb once – in December 1996 at the late, great activist bookstore, The Midnight Special, in Santa Monica, California. I was writing at Probe Magazine then and had covered Webb’s groundbreaking San Jose Mercury News three-part series, titled “Dark Alliance.”

CIA messing with journalism again, puts all journalists at danger

The CIA’s use of journalists as agents raise uncomfortable questions about Global Post and James Foley, writes WAYNE MARSDEN*

spystrategic-culture.org (Aug. 28) – THE increasing tendency of the Central Intelligence Agency and other U.S. intelligence agencies to disregard previous prohibitions against the use of journalists as agents puts every legitimate reporter around the world in jeopardy.

The CIA has a checkered past in the use of journalists as intelligence agents. The practice was common in the 1960s and early 70s but was banned by Presidents Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter. However, when President Ronald Reagan helped reignite the Cold War, the CIA again began using journalists as intelligence agents. The practice put a number of journalists in jeopardy, especially those taken captive by guerrillas groups during the Lebanese civil war. There is nothing to suggest any president since Reagan has discontinued the practice of using journalists as agents. Continue reading

Ukraine: The hysteria of the US monopoly media

Media-CulpaThe U.S. monopoly news media is reaching a new professional low point as it covers the Ukraine crisis by brazenly touting Official Washington’s propaganda themes, blatantly ignoring contrary facts and leading the American public into another geopolitical blind alley, writes former Newsweek correspondent Robert Parry*, editor of cosortiumnews.com.

By Robert Parry

(March 16) – AS THE UKRAINE CRISIS continues to deepen, the mainstream U.S. news media is sinking to new lows of propaganda and incompetence. Somehow, a violent neo-Nazi-spearheaded putsch overthrowing a democratically elected president was refashioned into a “legitimate” regime, then the “interim” government and now simply “Ukraine.”

The Washington Post’s screaming headline on Sunday is “Ukraine decries Russian ‘invasion,’” treating the coup regime in Kiev as if it speaks for the entire country when it clearly speaks for only a subset of the population, mostly from western Ukraine. The regime’s “legitimacy” comes not from a democratic election but from a coup that was quickly embraced by the U.S. government and the European Union. Continue reading

CNN, CBC: Fake image of a young child – again

We dot the i’s and cross the t’s: No, four-year-old Marwan fleeing Syria was not “alone” in the desert. The modus operandi behind the pervasive hoaxes being disseminated by the monopoly media augmented by anti-social media to facilitate intervention and subversion of sovereign countries

2014.2.19.Fake image of kid in desert

Media-CulpaAN IMAGE claimed by CNN journalists and rebroadcast on the state-owned CBC as well as CTV on February 17 to be of a 4-year-old Syrian child discovered alone near the Jordanian borders while his leg was cut and bandaged with plastic bags, is apparently part of a different image, where the family of the child are seen walking ahead of him and his leg is fine, euronews (and here), the London Guardian and the website Friends of Syria report. A CBC blog by John Bowman of cbcnews.ca also admitted later on Feb. 18 that “the fact that his family was just metres away was left behind.” Continue reading

The return of PSYOPS

Media-CulpaU.S.military’s media manipulation in advance of the recent attack on Fallujah demands more investigation, says FAIR, the media watchdog group

THE Los Angeles Times revealed this week (12/1/04) that the U.S. military lied to CNN in the course of executing psychological warfare operations, or PSYOPS, in advance of the recent attack on Fallujah. This incident raises serious questions about government disinformation and journalistic credibility, but recent discussions of the government’s propaganda plans have excluded some valuable context. On the role of the media to facilitate the disinformation of the U.S. state

Media-CulpaThree items on a U.S. psychological operation suppressed by the American monopoly media and obviously never mentioned on “Reliable Sources,” CNN’s own media monitoring program hosted by Howard Kurtz. (Postscript: In May 2013, Kurtz, the American journalist who publicly defended the war on Iraq on CNN along with a legion of generals parading as “analysts” as the bombs began to fall on Baghdad, was cashiered by Newsweek from The Daily Beast, allegedly over his boneheaded reporting about gay basketball star Jason Collins.)

Why were government propaganda experts working on news at CNN?

By FAIR (Fairness & Accuracy In Reporting)*

(March 27, 2000) – REPORTS in the Dutch newspaper Trouw (2/21/00, 2/25/00) and France’s Intelligence Newsletter (2/17/00) have revealed that several officers from the US Army’s 4th Psychological Operations (PSYOPS) Group at Ft. Bragg worked in the news division at CNN’s Atlanta headquarters last year, starting in the final days of the Kosovo War. Continue reading
