Postnational and supranational state – Where does jurisdiction lie?

Nation-building in the 21st century or empire-building | YOUTH FOR DEMOCRATIC RENEWAL*

Syrian graphicIn today’s world, the bourgeoisie is working to destroy the nation: it sells the nation’s assets and put its human, material and natural resources at the disposal of monopolies competing on world markets. In the 19th century an Anglo-Canadian state was established based on the model of the European nation-state. Continue reading

Nation-building in the 21st century or empire-building

160501-TorontoMayDay-02cropFinding a practical way forward for the workers’ movement to make the struggle for rights effective at this time | ROLF GERSTENBERGER*

Nation-building in the 21st century has to overcome the obstacles that developed during the 20th century. These obstacles derive primarily from the empire-building of the global monopolies and the big powers with which they are connected. Empire-building of the global monopolies during the twentieth century overwhelmed and defeated the nation-builders of the nineteenth century, the nascent period of capitalism, and the heroic nation-building attempt of the working class in the Soviet Union. International trade as a geopolitical weapon of the big powers

Discussion on the economy | K.C. ADAMS

The most powerful monopolies centred in the big powers control international trade. Free trade agreements allow them almost unrestricted access to most countries. The monopoly free traders oppose any opposition to their free access with stern measures, including blockades, sanctions, predatory war, imperialist financed and organized regime change, and other gross interference in the sovereign affairs of the people and their right to be. This day. Quebec’s National Day

June 24, 1834. Ludger Duvernay and the members of the Aide-toi, le ciel t’aiders Society (“God helps those who help themselves”) institute June 24 as Quebec’s National Day | http://www.fetenationale.qc.ca

On June 24, the people of Quebec officially mark their National Day established in 1834 by the Quebec patriot Ludger Duvernay and the members of the Aide-toi, le ciel t’aidera Society (“God helps those who help themselves”). The Society was founded on March 8 of the same year with the aim to “provide a designated place for thought to discuss the country’s state of affairs” and “to rekindle the burning desire of love of country, either by shedding light on the deeds of those governing us, or by paying fair tribute to the eloquent and brave defenders of our rights.” Continue reading

Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal: the issues, the method, the opposition

Indepth report by Renewal Update, May 25, 2016

Demonstrations at hearings oppose the deal

The people’s opposition is deepening the legitimacy crisis of the institutions which advocate the neo-liberal agenda and the parties which champion it. Their attempt to use public consultations to give legitimacy to a neo-liberal free trade deal that has already been negotiated and signed behind the backs of Canadians is seriously at risk. In every city where the government’s consultations on the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) have been held, Canadians inside and outside pointed out that far from upholding trade on the basis of mutual benefit, the TPP puts trade further under the domination of global monopolies in pursuit of their own private interests. It is a nation-wrecking agreement that attacks the right of Canadians to sovereign decision-making power. Continue reading

Today, the Quebec nation marks Patriots Day. Patriots Day celebrates the striving of the people to affirm their right to be. Beginning in the spring of 1837, when the British Crown formally rejected the demands of the Legislative Assembly of Lower Canada included in the 92 Resolutions of 1834, numerous mass meetings broke out across Quebec where the people spoke and demanded their democratic rights.
