Nova Scotia Council of Health Care Unions prepares strike vote

Health care and other public sector workers oppose enactment of anti-worker Bill 148, outside opening of Nova Scotia legislature, September 21, 2017.

The Nova Scotia Council of Health Care Unions is proceeding with the first ever province-wide Health Care Bargaining Unit strike vote to oppose the wrecking of health care by the anti-social offensive of the McNeil government and defend the rights of the health care workers. Workers’ Forum talked to Jason MacLean, President of the Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union (NSGEU), about how this work is going. The Nova Scotia Council of Health Care Unions is made up of the NSGEU, the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), Unifor, and the Nova Scotia Nurses’ Union.[1] Continue reading

February 27 marked a day of action in Halifax called “Nova Scotians Rise Up.” Around one thousand workers from all walks of life, youth and students came together throughout the afternoon at the opening of the Nova Scotia legislature to denounce the anti-social agenda of the McNeil Liberal government and its attacks on rights. Nova Scotia finance minister delivers pre-budget speech

Where public interest feels the pain, private interest is sure to gain

2014.09.29.HalifaxHeathcareRally-NSGEU-02crDiana Whalen, Minister of Finance for the Liberal McNeil government of Nova Scotia, delivered a pre-budget speech to the Chamber of Commerce of Halifax on March 25, 2015. She began with some truths: fewer working age people live in Nova Scotia; and, in her words, “The status quo is really not working for us.”

Fair enough, but who is the “us” for which the status quo is not working? Her government is attacking the claims of public sector workers on the value they produce. Her government is privatizing public services resulting in social wealth being diverted away from the public and into the pockets of private interests. Continue reading

TML Daily (Oct. 3) – On Monday, September 29, the Nova Scotia Liberal government tabled its union-busting Health Authorities Act in the Legislature. Amongst other anti-social measures carried out in the name of a phony austerity agenda, the bill attacks workers’ right to freedom of association.
