US media ‘experts’ on Iran with undisclosed ties to the defence industry

Since US president Donald Trump ordered the drone attack that assassinated Iranian Major General Qasem Soleimani and Abud Mahdi al-Muhandis, a leading member of the Iraqi armed forces and eight other officials, US and Canadian television news has been filled with commentary on the strike and its implications. An investigation by the Popular Information website reveals that numerous “experts” appearing on cable TV to opine on Iran have undisclosed financial ties to the biggest arms monopolies. They are deliberately paraded as neutral, independent, non-partisan and “third party experts” to confuse the people and put them out of action. Some are also featured by CBC. | JUDD LEGUM

This is significant because arms monopolies and other entities that do business with the Pentagon profit from war, the most profitable business of all. They sell the products that make war possible. If there is more fighting, they will sell more weapons. That’s why weapons manufacturers saw their stock prices spike after Gen. Soleimani was killed. Continue reading

Compare the coverage of Mosul and East Aleppo: it tells you a lot about propaganda

In both countries, two large Sunni Arab urban centres – East Aleppo in Syria and Mosul in Iraq – are being besieged by pro-government forces strongly supported by foreign airpower. Yet the coverage is very different | PATRICK COCKBURN in The Independent

But look at how differently the international media is treating a similar situation in Mosul, 300 miles east of Aleppo, where one million people and an estimated 5,000 Isis fighters are being encircled by the Iraqi army fighting alongside Kurdish Peshmerga and Shia and Sunni paramilitaries and with massive support from a US-led air campaign. Exponential growth of disinformation

Role of powerful private interests and the necessity to build our own organizations and media. “Although the use of social media by parties of the rich to gain electoral advantage and the wielding of social media as a weapon of U.S. imperialism against sovereign states have been well-documented, the use of social media by state agencies to directly interfere with progressive and anti-imperialist political movements is less well studied.” | SAM HEATON

internet
One of the serious problems that faces the people’s movement for empowerment today is the exponential growth of disinformation that takes advantage of modern communications technology and social media. No sooner have these advances been made than powerful private interests, the state and its agents in the ranks of the people have worked out how to dominate and wield the technology in their interests. Inside the shadowy US PR firm that’s pushing for regime change in Syria

He who plunders ... always lives in terror

He who plunders … always lives in terror

At the initiative of the “Syria Campaign”, some communalist organizations in Canada linked with the Trudeau government are supporting terrorist forces in Syria. On October 1st, in the wake of the U.S. war crimes in Deir Ezzor and Aleppo, they held a small rally on Parliament Hill in Ottawa as part of an international campaign orchestrated from the United States. A similar rally was held in Calgary. Posing as a non-political solidarity organization, the “Syria Campaign” leverages local partners and media contacts to push the U.S. into more aggressively toppling another Middle Eastern government | MAX BLUMENTHAL*

(October 3) – On September 30, demonstrators gathered in city squares across the West for a “weekend of action” to “stop the bombs” raining down from Syrian government and Russian warplanes on rebel-held eastern Aleppo. Thousands joined the protests, holding signs that read “Topple Assad” and declaring, “Enough With Assad.” Few participants likely knew that the actions were organized under the auspices of an opposition-funded public relations company called the Syria Campaign.

Call to nominate unsavoury group for Nobel Peace Prize

usastatesponsorofterrorism-cropA wide-ranging disinformation campaign as part of U.S. efforts at regime change in Syria has resulted in calls, including from within Canada, to nominate an unsavoury group for the Nobel Peace Prize. The group is called the “White Helmets” or “Syria Civil Defence.”

The “White Helmets” were founded in 2013 by James Le Mesurier, a British private military contractor, consultant for the UK Foreign Office and former military intelligence officer, when the governments of the U.S. and UK funded select individuals in rebel-held territory in Syria to travel to Turkey to allegedly receive training in rescue operations. The White Helmets group is supported by a foundation started by Le Mersurier called Mayday Rescue which operates out of the Netherlands, Dubai, Jordan and Turkey. Continue reading

One way the White House disinforms: ‘We created an echo chamber’

Media-CulpaA portrait of Obama’s spokesperson and policy guru Ben Rhodes explains how government propaganda works. This part is about selling the Iran deal to the U.S. public:

As Malley and representatives of the State Department, including Wendy Sherman and Secretary of State John Kerry, engaged in formal negotiations with the Iranians, to ratify details of a framework that had already been agreed upon, Rhodes’s war room did its work on Capitol Hill and with reporters. In the spring of last year, legions of arms-control experts began popping up at think tanks and on social media, and then became key sources for hundreds of often-clueless reporters. “We created an echo chamber,” he admitted, when I asked him to explain the onslaught of freshly minted experts cheerleading for the deal. “They were saying things that validated what we had given them to say.Continue reading

‘Panama Papers’: ‘Corruption’ as a weapon of propaganda and disinformation

mediaculpaheader.stretchedMonopoly journalism and propaganda are getting hard to tell apart, as with the flurry of “corruption” stories aimed at Russia’s Vladimir Putin and other demonized foreign leaders, writes ROBERT PARRY*.

Sadly, some important duties of journalism, such as applying evenhanded standards on human rights abuses and financial corruption, have been so corrupted by the demands of government propaganda – and the careerism of too many writers – that I now become suspicious whenever the mainstream media trumpets some sensational story aimed at some “designated villain.” Continue reading

CBC and Obama: Unacceptable

Far from having reporters cover the event or sending out a representative to speak with the protesters, the CBC called security demanding that the demonstrators get off the property.

(July 19) – On Friday afternoon July 18th in Halifax, Nova Scotia, hundreds of people gathered in front of the building which houses Canada’s state media, the CBC. An article in the CBC of the same day explains why the people of Halifax were disgusted; its subtitle quotes United States president Barack Obama: “’No nation should accept rockets fired into its borders,’ Obama says of Israel’s ground push.”

How should the nations where the United States carries out drone missile attacks respond to such an utterance from Obama? Continue reading

A general view of the eastern part of the Gaza Strip from Gaza City, on July 10, 2014 | AFP-Thomas Coex

At the start of the confrontation between the Resistance and Israel, the latter had absolute supremacy in using psychological warfare against the Palestinians. Ahmed Hadi informs that the armed Palestinian Resistance factions have since worked to improve their capabilities in information and propaganda, creating a counter-deterrent using the Internet and the language of the other side.

english.al-akhbar.com (July 11) Gaza IN CONJUNCTION with the physical warfare between Palestinian Resistance factions and Israel, the two sides are also engaged in psychological warfare, with a view to weaken and overwhelm the home front of the other side. No doubt, the two sides often hit and often miss, but in general, the Resistance’s communicators have sent out effective messages this time, even outdoing Israel, which has only rehashed its old propaganda seen in every previous round of conflict so far.

Military psychology experts say that the new development in this context is that the Palestinians are no longer afraid of the leaflets dropped by Israeli warplanes in order to turn the civilian population against the Resistance or force civilians to evacuate their homes, especially along the border areas.

The Resistance has launched a strong assault targeting the morale of the Israeli public, broadcasting videos in Hebrew focusing on its military capabilities, including its medium-range rocket arsenal and amphibious commandos. The Resistance has also called on Israelis to evacuate their homes, and hacked websites to display its messages. Recall that during the last conflict in Gaza, the Resistance had leaked the names and numbers of thousands of Israeli army officers.

US study documented nearly 1,000 lies from Iraq war propaganda campaign

121117-HalifaxGazaDemo-MediaCoop-03

Alex Lantier, wsws.org (26 January 2008) – THE systematic propaganda campaign waged by the Bush administration with the full collaboration of the mass media to drag the American people into a war of aggression has been newly documented by the Center for Public Integrity (CPI). The Washington-based, non-profit public policy journalism organization this week released a large database of the lies top government officials used to terrorize the US public into accepting the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

By the CPI’s count, the 380,000-word searchable database (available to the public at http://www.publicintegrity.org/WarCard/) contains at least 935 demonstrably false statements made on 532 separate occasions by the following officials: President George W. Bush, Vice-President Richard Cheney, National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, Secretary of State Colin Powell, Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz, and press secretaries Ari Fleischer and Scott McClellan. Disinformation on gas attacks in Syria (13): On the role of the dogs of war – think tanks, ‘experts’ and media

An analysis of the U.S. military industry ties of ‘experts’ and think tanks who ‘debated’ intervention against Syria

grim reaperThe following report documents the military industry ties of 22 U.S. media commentators and seven major think tanks that participated in media warmongering and disinformation on Syria. They are deliberately paraded as neutral, independent, non-partisan and “third party experts” to confuse the people and put them out of action. These conclusions are not unique to the USA. The disinformation of these media commentators are also widely broadcast in Canada. Stephen Hadley and numerous other individuals and organizations cited in this report are the same high-profile touts of U.S. imperialist strategy invited to present at the annual Halifax International Security Forum aka Halifax War Conference, which increasingly dictates the policy of the Canadian state. Furthermore, a 2001 study of role of Canadian “experts” and think tanks in advocating the “war on terror” in the Canadian media by Shunpiking Magazine revealed a similar modus operandi. – Tony Seed) (download pdf of report)

CBC’s flagship news program sold favourable coverage to the Harper government, then lied about it

mediaculpaheader.stretchedBoing Boing (Nov. 13) – Jesse Brown from the Canadaland podcast (RSS) writes: “CBC News has made a bad error in judgment. They sold news coverage to the Harper government, who were seeking publicity for a shipwreck salvaging expedition which, in a federal Minister’s words, is an effort to ‘enhance’ Canada’s sovereignty claims in the Arctic. The government is embroiled in a land claim dispute with Russia; both nations covet the massive oil and gas deposits that are thought to reside beneath the the Arctic Ocean. The CBC covered the government’s (fruitless) salvage expedition with fawning stories across its platforms: there’s a dedicated news website and a two-part documentary that aired on The National, CBC’s flagship newscast. CBC Chief Correspondent Peter Mansbridge himself reported live from the Arctic on a Parks Canada boat, at no time informing viewers that the subjects of his story had paid for his presence.”

You can read the confidential contract (unearthed through an anonymous Access to Information request) here, and the CBC’s evasively-worded denial here.

Thousands protest press credibility in march against monopoly media

Image from facebook.com @MarchAgainstMainstreamMedia

Image from facebook.com @MarchAgainstMainstreamMedia

I am posting this report for the information of readers, as it reflects the depth of the social disconnect between the people and the self-serving monopoly media. As a professional journalist, once with the Toronto Globe and Mail, I am sympathetic to the pressures faced by the journalists and staff but I do not believe such a media can be reformed nor the illusion that it can “speak truth to power.” The monopoly media is part of power, as demonstrated by how every daily newspaper in Canada supported the Anglo-American war on Iraq in 2003, and the US-UK-disinformation about weapons on mass destruction needed to confuse and disorient the people, as again today with Syria and Iran. I am for building an independent media which seeks truth from fact and reports objective reality in the interests of the people – or which helps us develop true and proper public opinion about the unfolding events. Such a media with lofty aims and representing a just cause cannot be termed “alternative media,” which is to marginalize it. That media is the mainstream media. It is the monopoly media that presents an “alternative” and anti-social view of reality. That was the conviction of myself and my colleagues with which we published Shunpiking, Nova Scotia’s discovery magazine, for 13 years and the response of thousands of our readers. – Tony Seed

Disinformation: Iraq and Iran, redlines and headline

Media-Culpa
To justify aggression against Syria and the Islamic Republic of Iran, like the fairy tale a decade ago about weapons of mass destruction buried in the deserts of Iraq, deafening propaganda is being floated world-wide – especially from the United States and Israel – about the alleged dangers of Syria using chemical weapons and Iran developing a nuclear bomb. In this feature NIMA SHIRAZI* provides multiple snapshots of media headlines from the 2002-04 and the current periods. The real issue is the ambition of the U.S. camp to eliminate Syria and Iran’s political independence, especially Iran’s independent development and management of current and future oil production on its territory. The gauntlet is openly being thrown down by the Big Powers, in which the monopoly media is providing all the facilities for the state to disinform the polity as to the real dangers posed. – TS

Argo: Hollywood as extension of CIA propaganda

THE MONOPOLY MEDIA rolled out the red carpet for the Hollywood film, Argo, the movie adaptation of the memoir published by ex-CIA operative Tony Mendez on the 1979 Iranian hostage crisis, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 7. It eulogized the cosmetic role of Canadian ambassador Ken Taylor, a common CIA operative and US cheerleader, fawned over actor-director Ben Affleck’s presence with predictable slavishness and adorned their websites with trailers and video clips. This of a movie which insults and denigrates an entire people.

Hollywood has played a dirty role in the smuggling of American spies from Iran during the early years of the popular anti-imperialist revolution in Iran. The latest movie, reviewed by ZAINAB CHEEMA and MAKSUD DJAVADOV,* shows the tight relationship between the CIA and Hollywood. That the Harper government suddenly and unilaterally severed diplomatic relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran on the same day as this racist film’s world premier in Canada is hardly fortuitous. Both are uncivilized instruments of imperialist warmongering and must be condemned. – TS

TODAY I reported on the refusal of CNN International (CNNi) to broadcast an award-winning documentary, “iRevolution”, that was produced in early 2011 as the Arab Spring engulfed the region and which was highly critical of the regime in Bahrain. The documentary, featuring CNN‘s on-air correspondent Amber Lyon, viscerally documented the brutality and violence the regime was using against its own citizens who were peacefully protesting for democracy.
