US soldier points his gun towards an Afghan passenger at the Kabul airport on August 16|Wakil KOHSAR / AFP

On August 16 the media showed people clinging to and even tied to the undercarriages of US airplanes at the Kabul airport. The C-17 Globemaster III transport planes were taking off for Qatar, one after the other, some partially empty, and people fell down from heights in the sky as the aircraft retracted the landing gear. One photo shows that three bodies were found in a residential neighbourhood which fell from the sky. Videos also emerged capturing people falling from the sky. Another video shows a US Army helicopter propelling people off the runway so that an American transporter can take off. The whole world saw this.

What Canada is up to at the UN

The appointment of the tried and true point man of the Anglo-Canadian state, Bob Rae, as Canada’s Ambassador to the United Nations is for purposes of achieving nefarious aims.

By Steve Rutchinski and Philip Fernandez

Canada is up to no good at the United Nations where it is very active in promoting imperialist definitions of rights and cajoling countries to adopt those definitions of rights under threat of retaliation by imperialist financial, military and political institutions. Canada’s aim is to push through a restructuring in the field of  international relations in a manner which serves U.S. imperialist interests. Continue reading

Reality check. Canada’s role in Haiti

2005.06.16.Haiti.montreal-haiti1

As surely as night follows day, the Canadian government is planning its involvement in US military aggression against Venezuela. Military engagement will justify humanitarian engagement and “democracy promotion.” It will violate the rule of law and appease the U.S. imperialists in their striving for domination, as it did in Haiti in 2004 and Libya in 2011. Trudeau government launches new program to meddle in the affairs of other countries

120501-MayDayWindsor-21crop3On August 26 the Trudeau government announced the establishment of the Peace and Stabilization Operations Program (PSOP). A news release from Global Affairs Canada describes the program as a “comprehensive approach to support Canadian interests and UN peace efforts.” The announcement comes shortly after Canadian Minister of National Defence Harjit Sajjan led a Canadian delegation to five African countries to seek out “facts on the ground” to help decide on a new military adventure appropriate for Canada within the U.S. imperialist push for new “peace operations” worldwide. From Africa to Syria, Liberal ‘peace operations’ are war operations and imperialist divide and rule

The need to establish an Anti-War Government and end Imperialist Divide and Rule in the name of peace | ENVER VILLAMIZAR

Demonstration in Ottawa, March 19, 2016 marked 13th anniversary of U.S. invasion of Iraq.

Demonstration in Ottawa, March 19, 2016 marked 13th anniversary of U.S. invasion of Iraq.

During the 2015 federal election, the Liberals’ campaign tried to create the impression in the minds of Canadians that electing the Liberals meant that in international affairs, Canada would play a role for peace, rather than for war. However, since being elected, the Liberals have stepped up participation in U.S.-led war-making and war preparations. Continue reading

‘Responsible conviction’ – Dion announces new foreign affairs doctrine

Trudeau government moves to criminalize the right to conscience

040320-TorontoAntiWar-001(April 9) – Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Stéphane Dion spoke at an international conference at the University of Ottawa on March 29, entitled “Canada in Global Affairs, New Challenges, New Ways.”[1] Dion continued the practice of prior governments of making important announcements about Canada’s foreign policy in an offhand manner. Dion used a speech to a university audience to announce a new foreign affairs doctrine for Canada he calls “responsible conviction.” Dion says “responsible conviction” will be the “guiding principle” the government will follow in implementing foreign policy. Canada’s promotion of neo-liberal imperialist internationalism

On March 16 at the United Nations the Liberal government announced its bid to fill one of five non-permanent seats on the UN Security Council in 2021. Commentary by SAM HEATON

140927-EdmontonECAWARPicket-02To convince Canadians that Canada is doing something worthwhile on the world scale the Trudeau government is pushing a neo-liberal imperialist internationalism as a basis for “peacekeeping” and “peacemaking.” From the time of the Second World War to the present, no Canadian government has taken any international measures whatsoever, whether through the Security Council, or any other body, which would defend democracy and establish an international order favourable to the interests of the people. The Liberal government’s hypocritical promotion of an aggressive role for Canada!

2003.10.25.WindsorAntiWar-01CRAmong matters which concern Canadians most are questions related to war and peace. Canadians opposed the Harper government not least for its extremist positions, opposition to peaceful resolution of conflicts and warmongering activities. The Harper government offended Canadians with its boorish rhetoric and refusal to comply with international norms. This included its support for the war in Afghanistan, participation in bombing and regime change in Libya, aggressive stance towards the peoples of Iran and Palestine and the DPRK, support for regime change in Syria and, most recently, embroiling Canada in a dirty war in Ukraine and another U.S.-led war in Iraq and then Syria. A very Canadian coup in Haiti: Top 10 ways Canada aided the 2004 coup and its reign of terror

Canadian troops deployed in Port-au-Prince on the day of the coup. A Canadian military helicopter flies over the Presidential Palace as the coup unfolds.

Canadian troops deployed in Port-au-Prince on the day of the coup. A Canadian military helicopter flies over the Presidential Palace as the coup unfolds.

Things went from bad to worse after Canada’s Liberal government helped plan and carry out the 2004 regime change that illegally ousted President Aristide’s democratically-elected government. Canada then helped empower and entrench an illegal coup-installed puppet regime that launched a reign of terror in which thousands of prodemocracy supporters were executed, jailed without charge, driven into hiding, or exiled. This Canadian-financed dictatorship, propped up by UN-sanctioned occupation forces, was applauded by corporations greedy to profit from “reconstruction” contracts, the privatisation of public services, and the wage-slavery of Haitian sweatshops.

Canada has a lot to answer for. Here are 10 ways in which our government contributed to this major travesty of justice in Haiti: Continue reading

US ‘perception management,’ Libya and use of human rights impostors to spawn NATO’s war of aggression

Anti-War Protestors at Halifax's Spring Garden Library during federal election, March 26, 2011

Anti-War Protestors at Halifax’s Spring Garden Library during federal election, March 26, 2011

The names change but the methods remain the same. In Iraq the imperial war facilitator was Ahmed Chalabi. In Libya he went by the name of Soliman Bouchuiguir, a shadowy figure whose baseless allegations against Colonel Muammar Gaddafi were endorsed by the UN system and its affiliated “human rights” agencies without the slightest verification. The warmongering chorus included one Nazanin Afshin-Jam, the sole Canadian signatory, a Harper appointee to the board of the Canadian Race Relations Foundation and an advocate of aggression against Iran; she married Defence Minister Peter MacKay, who despatched Canadian warplanes to bomb Libya.

In this article originally published on October 17, 2011, MAHDI DARIUS NAZEMROAYA* in text and JULIEN TEIL in video shed light on a failed system of international law and justice, which made itself complicit in NATO’s war crimes in Libya.

The analysis has been borne out by the passage of time: the overthrow of Libya’s government by NATO and Gulf Arab powers, at the cost of over 30,000 deaths, has led to a complete collapse in human rights and social conditions. Benghazi is now the centre of a bloody tribal-based revolt against the NATO government. The Harper war government must be held to account.

US ‘perception management’: Attempt to subvert the anti-war movement

Haligonians rally against threats of war against Syria, September 7, 2013

Demonstrating the necessity of a consistent and principled anti-imperialist and anti-war stand, Haligonians rally against threats of war against Syria, September 7, 2013 as part of its action program of weekly pickets

Since the anti-war protests on Vietnam, the U.S. government has made “perception management” of the American people a high priority, feeding them a steady diet of propaganda about foreign crises, even getting U.S. and Canadian “peace groups” to buy into and actually sell “pro-democracy” wars, write MARGARET SARFEHJOOY and COLEEN ROWLEY*.

(Dec. 25) – “War is peace” double-speak has become commonplace these days. And, the more astute foreign policy journalists and commentators are beginning to realize the extent of how “liberal interventionists” work in sync with neocon warhawks to produce and sustain a perpetual state of U.S. war.

More and more “peace and social justice” groups are even being twisted into “democracy promotion,” U.S. militarism style. Continue reading

US ‘perception management’: The ‘evil enemy’, from Reagan to Obama

In the 1980s, the Reagan administration pioneered “perception management” to get the American people to “kick the Vietnam Syndrome” and accept more U.S. interventionism, but that propaganda structure continues to this day getting the public to buy in to endless war, writes ROBERT PARRY*.

(Dec. 28) – To understand how the American people find themselves trapped in today’s Orwellian dystopia of endless warfare against an ever-shifting collection of “evil” enemies, you have to think back to the Vietnam War and the shock to the ruling elite caused by an unprecedented popular uprising against that war.

While on the surface Official Washington pretended that the mass protests didn’t change policy, a panicky reality existed behind the scenes, a recognition that a major investment in domestic propaganda would be needed to ensure that future imperial adventures would have the public’s eager support or at least its confused acquiescence. CNN, CBC: Fake image of a young child – again

We dot the i’s and cross the t’s: No, four-year-old Marwan fleeing Syria was not “alone” in the desert. The modus operandi behind the pervasive hoaxes being disseminated by the monopoly media augmented by anti-social media to facilitate intervention and subversion of sovereign countries

Media-CulpaAN IMAGE claimed by CNN journalists and rebroadcast on the state-owned CBC as well as CTV on February 17 to be of a 4-year-old Syrian child discovered alone near the Jordanian borders while his leg was cut and bandaged with plastic bags, is apparently part of a different image, where the family of the child are seen walking ahead of him and his leg is fine, euronews (and here), the London Guardian and the website Friends of Syria report. A CBC blog by John Bowman of cbcnews.ca also admitted later on Feb. 18 that “the fact that his family was just metres away was left behind.” Continue reading

War criminals are not welcome in Halifax

First in a series by TONY SEED*

HALIFAX, the principal NATO port on the North Atlantic and the headquarters of Maritime Command, is hosting yet another “Halifax International Security Forum” (HISF) on November 18-20. For the third year in a row, three hundred hand-picked militarists will be occupying the luxurious Halifax Westin Hotel at the expense of the Canadian taxpayer.

The Harper government has advanced $7.5 million of public funds to a private Washington-based organization comprised of five individuals — four of them American citizens — in an unsourced contract to organize the “Halifax” conference over the next three years. Participation in the HISF is by invitation only; the Canadian people are excluded. Many of the sessions are classified as “off-the-record.” Continue reading

Atlantic Council: Securing the 21st century for NATO

THIS indepth article by RICK ROZOFF of STOP NATO elaborates the most important features of the imperial agenda of the Obama Administration, particularly its so-called new security doctrine, to be adopted at the upcoming NATO Summit in Lisbon, Portugal, November 17-19. Along with profiling the imperialist cadre behind NATO in the USA and their links, it also deals with the retasking of the NATO bloc on a global basis, in which the Harper government is embroiling the Canadian people. It is published as background information on the Halifax International Security Forum, organized by the German Marshall Fund of Washington, which is interlinked with the Atlantic Council of NATO, and wholly funded by the Canadian Department of National Defence and the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency.
