January 6 events in the US: An event that lays the groundwork for increased police powers

From the Biden forces the efforts are now to portray the events of January 6 as an “epiphany,” a revelation. January 6 is the Christian celebration of the Epiphany that ends the 12 days of Christmas with the coming of the three wise men, the Magi. “On this day of revelation, let us pray that this instigation to violence will provide an epiphany for our country to heal,” said Nancy Pelosi, speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives. President-Elect Joe Biden also spoke of an epiphany after the November election | ANNA DI CARLO

Within minutes of the January 6 breach of the Capitol Building by protesters incited by Trump’s claim that victory in the 2020 Presidential Election was stolen from him, there was a widespread description of the event as an “insurrection” by media personalities and elected officials. This represents a departure from the normal vocabulary of the ruling elite to categorize protests in which violence erupts. Continue reading

Koch and Soros join to form Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft

United actions in Washington, DC on March 30, 2019, 70th anniversary of NATO, stand against war

A main problem the U.S. ruling circles are trying to solve is preserving the U.S. and their rule in the face of intensifying conflicts among the factions vying for power, particularly control of the presidency. There is concern that Trump has been unable to unite the vying factions, especially the huge military bureaucracy, while also keeping the people dispersed and disempowered. In attempting to contend with these problems and unite the factions, some of the most powerful forces have joined together to establish the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft. It is openly a means to bring together what are often called anti-war conservatives and liberal democrats. It is funded by billionaires George Soros, a big Clinton backer, and the Koch Brothers, Trump supporters and notorious for their anti-union and anti-people actions. Continue reading

Living in wacko-land

By PAUL ROBINSON | Irrussianality

(September 25) – A chance encounter with a Twitter post got me following links on the internet today as I filled in time between classes. I know that there’s a lot of truly rotten stuff out there, and every now and again I write some piece denouncing some example or other. But on the whole, I try and stay clear of it. Still, immersing myself in all this was rather interesting, so I thought that I would share the results.

The Tweet which got me started was this one from Toronto-based Ukrainian-Canadian ‘political analyst’ Ariana Gic, who writes occasional columns for outlets like the Atlantic Council. I’m always rather sceptical of ‘independent analysts’ who seem to lack an institutional base, and am frankly amazed  that one can making a living that way, but apparently one can.  Continue reading

Media ignore government influence on Facebook’s plan to fight government influence

Gizmodo: Facebook Partners With D.C. Think Tank to Combat Election Meddling

Gizmodo , May 17, 2018

The U.S. social media mega-giant has been presenting itself as a legitimate force to police political discourse. During the past week, Facebook shut down three websites that featured information critical of the Politics of Assassination attempted against Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on August 4. The New York Times reveals the corporate influence behind some of its most-used sources

NYT: How Think Tanks Amplify Corporate America's InfluenceFAIR (Aug. 12) – The New York Times (8/7/16) reveals the corporate influence behind some of its most-used sources.

A recent New York Times article (8/7/16) detailed, in often scathing terms, what many media critics already knew: that think tanks are frequently not objective, neutral arbiters of information, but corporate- and government-funded agenda-promoters with an academic veneer to give the appearance of impartiality. Liberals’ program for ‘real change’

TML Weekly  carried an important editorial in its recent issue dated April 2 entitled, “The More Counterfeit the Measures, the Deeper the Crisis.”

The editorial addresses the program of reform the Trudeau Liberal government is implementing based on its electoral platform calledReal Change. TML Weekly  addresses the legitimacy crisis in which what are called the democratic institutions are mired, and puts the government’s program of reforms in this context. “The deepening opposition of workers, women, youth and Indigenous peoples to the nation-wrecking of the neo-liberal bourgeoisie… has peeled the facade from the democracy and revealed the police powers which remain in lieu of the government of laws,” TML Weekly  explains. Trudeau appoints NATO academic as foreign policy advisor

grad

Trudeau Liberals treatment of important questions of war and peace

Roland Paris is former Founding Director of the Centre for International Policy Studies  (CIPS) at the University of Ottawa, from which he is now on leave. He is a NATO academic and involved with corporate think tanks and such subversive U.S. agencies as the Halifax International Security Forum (see here) advancing a warmongering foreign policy for Canada. The National Post called Paris “the man behind Justin Trudeau’s foreign policy.” A concern for Canadians is Paris’ foreign policy preoccupations, which include increasing military spending and Canada’s role in the aggressive NATO military bloc, as well as the so-called “digital diplomacy” – the Harper government’s use of social media tools to subvert sovereign governments that Washington deems hostile to its interests (see here and here). The Post reported on December 29 that Paris was working for the Liberals before the election was called and that “his fingerprints are clearly evident in the party’s election platform.” All the while Paris was also frequently quoted, before and after the election, as an independent academic and expert commenting on Liberal foreign policy prospects. Paris is also said to be present at “most, if not all, of Trudeau’s meetings with foreign leaders.”

By SAM HEATON

Roland Paris is Senior Advisor to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. He was appointed to this post in November 2015. Paris has played a significant role in the efforts of the Liberal intelligentsia and think tanks to sort out the problems of a Liberal foreign policy for Canada today. As a frequent commentator on Canadian foreign policy and collaborator with NATO and other institutions of U.S. imperialism such as the Halifax International Security Forum, Paris’ preoccupations are a cause for concern for Canadians, who would like to see Canada and its government as a force for peace. The Liberal government’s hypocritical promotion of an aggressive role for Canada!

2003.10.25.WindsorAntiWar-01CRAmong matters which concern Canadians most are questions related to war and peace. Canadians opposed the Harper government not least for its extremist positions, opposition to peaceful resolution of conflicts and warmongering activities. The Harper government offended Canadians with its boorish rhetoric and refusal to comply with international norms. This included its support for the war in Afghanistan, participation in bombing and regime change in Libya, aggressive stance towards the peoples of Iran and Palestine and the DPRK, support for regime change in Syria and, most recently, embroiling Canada in a dirty war in Ukraine and another U.S.-led war in Iraq and then Syria. Disinformation on war against Syria and the dogs of war – think tanks, ‘experts’ and media

The U.S. military complex ties of ‘experts’ and think tanks who justify intervention against Syria and Iraq under the pretext of ‘war on terrorism’

Media-CulpaThe following report by LEE FANG in The Nation documents the military industry ties of selected U.S. media commentators and major think tanks that are participating in media warmongering and disinformation on Syria, Iraq and Islam. They are deliberately paraded as neutral, independent, non-partisan and “third party experts” to confuse the people and put them out of action. Their role is not unique to nor limited to the USA. The disinformation of these American “experts” are also widely broadcast by the media in annexed Canada.  Continue reading

Disinformation on gas attacks in Syria (13): On the role of the dogs of war – think tanks, ‘experts’ and media

An analysis of the U.S. military industry ties of ‘experts’ and think tanks who ‘debated’ intervention against Syria

grim reaperThe following report documents the military industry ties of 22 U.S. media commentators and seven major think tanks that participated in media warmongering and disinformation on Syria. They are deliberately paraded as neutral, independent, non-partisan and “third party experts” to confuse the people and put them out of action. These conclusions are not unique to the USA. The disinformation of these media commentators are also widely broadcast in Canada. Stephen Hadley and numerous other individuals and organizations cited in this report are the same high-profile touts of U.S. imperialist strategy invited to present at the annual Halifax International Security Forum aka Halifax War Conference, which increasingly dictates the policy of the Canadian state. Furthermore, a 2001 study of role of Canadian “experts” and think tanks in advocating the “war on terror” in the Canadian media by Shunpiking Magazine revealed a similar modus operandi. – Tony Seed) (download pdf of report)

Public Accountability Initiative (Oct. 11, 2013) – DURING the public debate around the question of whether to attack Syria, Stephen Hadley, former national security adviser to George W. Halifax International Security Forum: The network of subversion, annexation and war in the making – the ‘Halifax Canada Club’

By TONY SEED

This article is part of an ongoing investigation into the Halifax International Security Forum (HISF), which was formed in 2009 as a covert arm of the U.S. state that presents itself as an “independent” and “non-partisan” body with quasi-permanent status. It was originally published on November 21, 2013 and revised on April 15, 2014; November 17 and 21, 2014; February 17, 2016; and February 28, 2021.

Topics at the 2014 HISF Forum include: “Pipeline Corridors: The Geopolical Role of Energy Infrastructure.” Given that one of the opening plenary sessions is titled “O Say, Can’t You see? The Indispensable Role of the Exceptional Superpower,” one must ask, what is behind this?

120614-NorthVancouver-NoBillC-38-03BatseyAgar

THE Halifax International Security Forum (HISF) aka the Halifax War Conference was formed in 2009 by the Washington-based German Marshall Fund and the Harper ruling clique as a parallel body to established agencies of the Canadian state such as the departments of foreign affairs and national defence. The U.S. board of directors of the HISF includes three members of the Council of Foreign Relations (CFR), the president of Freedom House, and two experienced agents with the National Endowment for Democracy, whose work in subversion throughout the world is nefarious and well-documented. The programmatic work of the CFR, which is also the “media partner” of the HISF, for the integration of Canada into the United States, has also been well exposed. Continue reading

Tom Flanagan’s last stand (II); The neo-liberal Calgary School

By PEGGY MORTON*

We are posting below Part Two of “Tom Flanagan’s Last Stand” by Peggy Morton from TML Daily. For Part One please click here.

Part Two

TOM FLANAGAN made his last stand in Lethbridge on traditional Blackfoot territory, putting an end to his career as a political pundit. But the influence of the Calgary School remains with Stephen Harper at the head of the dictatorship ruling Canada on behalf of the monopolies. The Calgary School is a group of neo-liberal academics from the University of Calgary’s political science, economics and history departments of which Flanagan has been a part. Their role both in academia and behind the scenes in the cartel parties that keep Canadians out of power shows the extent of U.S. imperialist dictate over Canadian political affairs.

Tom Flanagan’s last stand

We have written before about one Tom Flanagan, a member of the so-called Calgary School, a small, shadowy group of neoliberal academics from the University of Calgary’s political science, economics and history departments. Flanagan and other members of the group played a key role in promoting and expanding the Alberta-founded Reform Party, finally facilitating its takeover of the old Progressive Conservative Party in 2003 to create the federal Conservative Party that Stephen Harper, a Calgary MP, now leads. Flanagan then became Senior Advisor to the Conservative Leader and National Campaign Chair for the Conservative Party. Flanagan is part of the U.S. fifth column in Canada that operates on different levels. He was originally hired by the University of Calgary in 1968 during the height of the youth and student movement by the first chair of the political science department, U.S.-born Edgar Burke Inlow, who himself was hired in 1961 directly from an intelligence position with the U.S. Department of Defense. Flanagan is a director of the Canadian Defence & Foreign Affairs Institute, based in the university’s Centre for Military and Strategic Studies and financed by some of the world’s largest arms contractors (General Dynamics, Lockheed Martin Canada, and Com Dev to name a few); founding member and president of the discreet, neo-liberal Civitas Society; and has been given a national platform by the CBC and the National Post. Now, his media career as a pundit has come to an end, writes PEGGY MORTON in the first of a two-part series, due to the courageous stand of First Nations’ activists in Lethbridge, Alberta.

Who speaks for Alberta?: Tom Flanagan’s last stand

By PEGGY MORTON*

ON FEBRUARY 27, 2013, the Southern Alberta Council on Public Affairs (SACPA) and the University of Lethbridge hosted a talk on the abolishment of the Indian Act with Tom Flanagan. Flanagan is a University of Calgary professor of political science, former advisor to Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Wildrose campaign strategist in the 2012 Alberta election.

During the talk, Levi Little Mustache asked Flanagan about a comment made to the student paper The Manitoban back in 2009 in which he stated, “But that’s actually another interesting debate or seminar: what’s wrong with child pornography – in the sense that it’s just pictures?” Flanagan’s response was filmed by Arnell Tailfeathers and posted to YouTube. The video went viral and led to the University of Calgary announcing Flanagan’s early retirement, CBC’s Power and Politics dropping him as a commentator and the University of Calgary announcing that Flanagan would remain on sabbatical until he retired later in 2013 but would not return to the classroom. Germany: a ‘continuity of personnel’ between Nazi organizations and today

Nazi recast as ‘a distinguished antifascist’

Editor’s note: This article has been updated on 2 March 2013 with the inclusion of the article “Reemerging Interest in the Southeast” (posted at end) containing additional information.

MUNICH (german-foreign-policy.com) – FOLLOWING THE SCANDAL of awarding a prize in honour of the Nazi propagandist, Rudolf Vogel, a state-financed German foreign policy organization has announced that it will assess its own history. Its president, Gernot Erler (SPD), declared that there may be a “continuity of personnel” between Nazi organizations and the Southeast Europe Association (Südosteuropa-Gesellschaft – SOG). In fact, influential Nazi personnel had participated in the founding of not only the SOG, but also of other German institutions involved in Southeast Europe. Years ago, high-ranking SOG officials had denied that Vogel had been involved in Nazi activities. Obviously, in full knowledge of West German media reports on Vogel’s work for Nazi propaganda, the SOG’s honourary president, for example, claimed that Vogel had been a “distinguished antifascist.” He also said that Vogel had discovered “his devotion to Southeast Europe” while he was stationed in Thessaloniki, where, as is known today, he worked as a “consultant with special expertise” – at the time when 50,000 Jews were being deported. The Southeast Europe Association describes itself as “one of the important pillars of External Cultural Politics” for the German government. Continue reading

Atlantic Council: Securing the 21st century for NATO

THIS indepth article by RICK ROZOFF of STOP NATO elaborates the most important features of the imperial agenda of the Obama Administration, particularly its so-called new security doctrine, to be adopted at the upcoming NATO Summit in Lisbon, Portugal, November 17-19. Along with profiling the imperialist cadre behind NATO in the USA and their links, it also deals with the retasking of the NATO bloc on a global basis, in which the Harper government is embroiling the Canadian people. It is published as background information on the Halifax International Security Forum, organized by the German Marshall Fund of Washington, which is interlinked with the Atlantic Council of NATO, and wholly funded by the Canadian Department of National Defence and the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency.
